1985 Graham Vintage Port

Just had an '85 vertical of Taylor, Graham and Dow. I'm still perplexed by 85s and can't make my mind up. I feel they have a real staying-power, but somehow are not so enjoyable now. They could turn out great, but might fade away to be an odd mix of dried-out fruit with loads of tannins with no job ...

I'd be grateful if someone could remind us about tongs. There were some threads about this earlier in the year and I thought we'd pinned down a good suplier, but it all happend when I was (like just now) buried under work and missed it. Can someone remind us who was supplying them? For the record, I...

Thanks. I did not get to these until quite late in the tasting - shame as it would have been useful, I think, to try it again an hour later. My experience of the neighbouring bottles indicate they probably did not have their top somelier opening them that night! I couldn't see the usual tell-tale si...

I met Alex at the BBR annual tasting last night and they had this one on offer. I thought it was excellent and gave it 4/5 on the Broadbent scale. However, my notes indicate that I would not give it a long life. It was far paler and lighter than the Taylor, Graham and Dow I've tried in the last few ...

Probably on Boxing Day I will open my surprise bottle of Fonseca Guimaraens 1987 that I helped Elizabeth to choose for me. Alex A few weird coincidences here, I also helped my wife buy me some FG '87 for an Xmas pressie last year and decdided to save it for this Xmas. And, like Derek's father, will...

........ placed it on the bottom shelf of my wine fridge............... I put those half bottles in the general fridge - i.e. at about 35-40F. I keep my wine fridge at about 50-55F. I think that 15-20F makes a lot of difference. I know that, as my wine fridge is locked and I have the only key. On o...

If others wish to spend $30 a time buying nice boxes then that's fine, I just wish we didn't all have to pay the extra if we would rather have more VP than wood :? Derek If you'd have all followed my advice you'd have trundled down to Costco in Lakeside in the summer where they had a mountain of bo...

No, just the old cliche "base of neck or better". Slightly damaged labels  (That means v. good labels for that age, or maybe replacements.) From a private collection. Considering my zero experience of buying in France may be best left alone. If they were in England I'd phone up and ...

I don't suppose anyone fancies sharing the 5 botles of this for sale at Christies Paris on 29 November? Looks like the bottles would cost GBP200 each. I've never shipped from Paris so no idea of cost and how that works. There's also another Noval 31 there. Except for that Noval, looks like w...

Great notes Stuart. Can I ask, did you enjoy this horizontal alone or with others? I'm not suggesting that you may have sloshed your way through 3 bottles of VP on your own in 24 hours :drunk: - I just wondered, if others were involved, would they be willing to have their notes posted here for comp...

God of SW77 :P :? I'm not the God - that's the SW '77 (well, a sort of pagan God) I'm a sort of druid really, that worships that God at sunset. Question is, will my current stocks last me until 2008? Or will I need to buy during '07? I've only got about 10 bottles just now. In my job the lead to 31...

Will do. I suspect we'll see a few more cases appearing soon now the 30yr anniversary is upon us. Hopefully also some Gould Campbell 77 will work its way out onto the market. I can see 77s drying up now and no doubt speculators are keeping their powder dry to target the 30-year market. Look what ha...

I wouldn't say weeks. For an 80s vintage (in a decanter) it will, let's say, "evolve" over a few days. It'll probably reach its peak after about 12 -24 hours and be fine on days 2 and 3. However, after that it may start to deteriorate. I wouldn't leave it more than 4/5 days. What a lot of ...

Scroll down and you'll see I asked just that question a few weeks ago and there seemed little knowledge of it. (Don't worry about missing it, I've had to have others remind me of my OWN postings on subjects I've brought up again  ) I may try one at Xmas and see how it goes. The Wine Soc's port...

Is it a duff bottle? I hope so, as I have plenty more.. :? Definitely duff. I've had this several times and my notes are almost the opposite of yours. One of the few young wines already elevated to my all-time top ten. It does have the quaffable early-drinking characteristics of the 94s but all min...

Thanks for that. But I tried navigating to the same site from the Christies home page without success... - how did you get to it? The Christies site is a bit odd in that the pdf and "active" lists come up at different times - the best place to look is usually the wine dept. page "eur...

Agree with all this, totally. I can back it by lots of evidence as I've had a number of identical vintages: one from a black Oporto bottle and one from a UK green Bdx-style bottle. As (even when from auction  ) I only buy with good provenance I can say that as long as the storage is good it mak...
