I'm with the SQVP loving crowd. Like Derek I managed to pick up some bargains just before Christmas and this is due to Supermarket policy. I would not be able to get the same sort of discounts with a full-declared VP and so would not have as much in my cellar. In recent years I have been able to get...

Oh rats, it's 1966 again, although that 1934 was very enjoyable I like my Ports a bit younger and fresher than that.

It has to be the 1966 that we had at the Crusting Pipe a couple of years ago, looking forward to a repeat performance in the same location soon.

Aahh... New Year's Eve. This is traditionally a time for Champagne, which was limited to Waitrose this time. I did manage a snifter or two of Dow's 10 yo tawny though.

This all depends on what is on offer at the supermarkets!

For actual drinking then it is probably Dow, Fonseca, Graham and Warre. For opening up and throwing into the Bolognese then it is Warre and Croft as these have been the best offers recently.

I was being facetious - it happens. It's probably more co-buns. I still can't drink the tawnies.

Apologies Roy. It wasn't meant to be a promotion, rather just a link to keep both sets in touch.

London Off-line, 18/19 July

Ronnie will be coming over from the Netherlands along with Lady Roots. It's only just been finalised so no definite date yet but one of the above. Suggestion of the Crusting Pipe again because they have been so good to us in the past and it always works. Edited by Roy Hersh for promotion of another ...

I really shouldn't mention that we got this at £5 per bottle here, recently, that would be too cruel.

Warre, huh, good God, what is it good for? Quite a lot, actually. Nice looking, smells nice and tastes great, elegant to go with it. The lesser ones are great for cooking. I used to pronounce it Worrer, because I'm sometimes stupid. Cockburn rhymes with go burn, as it is preferable to throw the rubi...

$25 = £13, which isn't bad for Warre's LBV. Standard price here is £15. Good Port and reasonable for a bit more bottle-aging. Always elegant.

Don't use irony Alan, it confuses them.

Wait for the ticking sound whilst they work out whether that's a bit like 'Steely', check dictionary and then work out where the irony is in Alan's post.

I am saddened by Morrison's wine section. The Port is particularly disappointing, whereas Safeway was always pretty good. I seldom buy any wine from them, normally only Champagne on offer or splits for cooking.
