1987 Dow's Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port
Quinta do Bomfim 1987 There was a lot of gunge at the bottom along with a few twigs and possibly a fish. Decanting cleared all of this debris. Deep garnet colour and clear, nicely viscous. Nose is powerfully alcoholic with some basic red fruit tones In the mouth it's medium hot with acids and tannin...

1987 Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port
Because we were drinking it after midnight on Saturday: Graham's Malvedos 1987 This was actually the surprise of the night for the majority of us. Easily the lowest priced port on show at about £10 for a half bottle. Medium garnet colour, showing plums on the nose with them returning with cherries i...

Re: Ever had a port you didn't like?
Oh God yes. Cruz 1989 Vintage Port was utterly disgraceful first time. It was better when Al B. dragged one along but it confused me on that occasion. Cruz Ruby was pretty rotten too. However, Cockburn's Special Reserve deserves my greatest ire for having the temerity to be the most popular Port in ...

Red, I like them red. Just to confirm, not white, especially not pink, red. Tawny is reddish. So red then.

Re: How do you clean out your decanters?
I only stuff them in the dishwasher when they have gone a bit mucky over time. I prefer to rinse, stick some hot water and a little detergent then shake vigorously, then rinse and rinse and rinse.
I have those metal balls as well but haven't used them in years.

Re: #10 What is your favorite vintage of Warre's VP?
I like Warre. If this makes me sound like a Bush then it is purely coincidental. I was very saddened by the state of the 1966 that we had at the Deeper Underground tasting, it was patently unwell. The 1970 that we had a few days later was utterly delightful. I've had the 1980, 1983 and 1985 as well,...

Re: Do you prefer Tawny or Ruby Style of Port
So there we have it, a clear majority prefer good vintage port to good colheita port. More seriously, what has really surprised me was how evenly split we were, and how that split had some distinct correlation to location (but since I am not a statistician I cannot say whether the correlatio...

Re: Port, The Brits and Stilton
I have a great fondness for Stilton, it is one of my favourite cheeses. I am a big fan of both Cropwell Bishop and Colston Basset with Long Clawson having the honour of being the one I can get huge wheels of at extraordinarily low prices yet still high quality. There are only three other producers: ...

Re: Do you prefer Tawny or Ruby Style of Port
In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs: Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby!
This is purely based on VP not base Ruby nor LBV. I thoroughly enjoy a good tawny but it is the fruitiness with chocolate, coffee and spices of VP that I adore.

Re: Is it possible???
I like the name of this new Port that you've got but this TN is below par, Roy. I assume that you are still trying to ascertain the year by the "???" at the end. I remember a poster called "nobody", nice bloke from Singapore, on another site but "no one" I have not met ...

Re: Half bottles: are they relevant?
I am perfectly happy with the cuteness of the Warre's Otima bottles, apart from the above greed-sobriety continuum anomoly above. The other bottles that I've seen like this are the Gilbert's G-plan stuff, which is a bit junky but pretty cheap.

Re: Bottled Water - (excellent article, a must read!!)
Too big to read all but I know the arguments. I drink both bottled and tap water, normally filtered to get rid of the chlorine taste. I only drink bottled now when I am unable to get hold of tap. The fun story is Fiji Water comes from a bore-hole found using British aid to find clean water for local...

Re: Port, The Brits and Stilton
A few discussions have gone by on this in the past and I mostly think it doesn't work but sometimes it does. I am happy with a tawny and Stilton and sometimes a youngish VP goes well, normally a drier style. However, most of the time the creaminess of the stilton coats the tongue and kills off the P...

Re: Half bottles: are they relevant?
Are they relevant? Of course. I would like more half bottles as I don't tend to kill a whole bottle on my own, although I will kill more than one in company. I find the 0.5l to be slightly annoying and end up leaving a litle or saying "sod it" and polishing it off before bed when I didn't ...

I do like to try a Port in its brutal youth sometimes. I am reminded of the Fonseca 2003 that the Rootses opened a couple of years ago: it was fresh, vibrant, powerful and tannic as stewed tea but I really enjoyed it. Meanwhile, attempts at Fonseca 2000 have appeared fruitless - literally: harsh and...
