Re: Decant advice for Vesuvio VP 1997
Hey yes I owe you all an update. I did manage to get more in the range of 5-6 hours of decant but I was pressed for time. I know this isn't the tasting notes section of the forum but the bottle was totally fresh and I would say still young at 26yrs old. Amazing integration and truly enjoyable. Mid-s...

Hello port lovers, after considering, the Roriz 2003, Niepoort 1997, I finally settled on opening for some friends the Vesuvio 1997. Hopefully, I made the right choice and its in good shape. My cellar temp fluctuates between summer and winter. I have this one for many years, purchased near release f...

Re: crazy birthday idea
Hi Folks, just a short update on this project of mine. Well, 50th coming up in October and I managed to get 2 bottles since I first started down this path. So I have the Kopke 67 (bottled in 2013) purchase at the Gaia cellars in 2016. And the recently released Taylor 67 VOSH (bottled in 2016) in a 1...

difficult question on Port Value Chain analysis
Hi all, not sure if this one is for a future guest corner or if we can takle it here but I have wondered about in general terms and maybe in percentages what % does the grapes, the bottle, cork, aguardente, labour, bottling, etc.. again, I'm certainly not after margins which no one will share anyway...

Re: Top 10 hotels for wine lovers
Hi I know the area well, almost every time I go to PT, I make the stop at those gardens and to near by Luso (natural spring water), had a nice coffee from the balcony overlooking the gardens.. never occurred to me to look at the wine list of the restaurant. I always felt that place would be a touris...

Summer trip to PT, looking for other members
Hi all, I haven't been around the forum much lately due to lack of leisure time… but now I can say that I've booked a family vacation from July 6th to 23rd. Exact itinerary is still being worked out but I would love the opportunity do step away from family duties and hook up with any FTOP members fo...

Re: Lead Crystal precautions
Fred,
if you die from the lead in your port from your crystal Port class, that decanted in your crystal decanter... there certainly worst ways to die. Means you had lots of port, or your crystal is of very very superior quality....
cheers

Re: Using Meat to Make Port
Hi all, as a kid, I was told that story too, "meat from a baby calf in the lagar", more than once too, I laughed every time. As this always came to me from people who rarely if ever drink port and never from anyone near Douro region...So to me, since I like conspiracy theories...These stor...

Re: What is the OLDEST Colheita in your collection?
For me it is an empty bottle of Calem 1964 (bottled in 97) purchased at calem years ago and opened a few years latter on this side of the atlantic. :( Old coheitas are rare in this city. Around here old colheitas are from the 80's and 90's [beg.gif] with two exceptions priced as exceptions. P...

Re: How to turn around Port sales into the black again?
Kids under 25, drink Cognac and Pink champagne because they see Rap stars drinking it in their videos. And sales are up. But do we want that? I think 500ml bottle would help. I think each of us has a role to play educating those around us friends, kids, neighbours...(you know the old religion/sect a...

Re: Fun article about port glasses
I agree, the tiny little ones was in every home that served port as I grew up. Either in Portugal or here in Canada...I was even given a set as gift to a port lover that I was. Later my wife bought another set of "nicer" ones but still the tiny ones. She thought it would make me happy...Wh...

Salon des vins du Douro et de Porto 2011 (Montreal)
Hi all, I attended this IVDP driven event aimed at the restaurant and beverage folks yesterday. Oct 18th it was Toronto, 19th in Montreal and 20th in Calgary... I was at the Montreal event and I must say, every year it gets smaller in size. My general impression this time was more reds and less Port...

Re: As you grow older, do you shy away from purchasing new Vintages of Port wine?
I'm turning 44 next month and for myself, I stopped buying at VP2003(wedding year), but for my kids, I got 2007 and will get some 2009 (their respective birth years). The plan is as you get older you can afford to buy older VP. So VP I have in the cellar spans 1985-2003... and should I feel for anyt...

Re: Need suggestions for extra special bottle
Thanks all,
for the suggestions and also the warnings on putting all my bets on one bottle versus 2 or 3 btls. I share with my group and start searching for some of these.
The group was leaning towards VP but I suppose some ancient colheita could be considered too.
cheers

Need suggestions for extra special bottle
Hi all, so what would be the one bottle to get if you had $1000 budget? A few of us are thinking of pooling our money and enjoying something that we only currently dream of...or read about. Maybe buying a bottle from a private individual might be more value per dollar versus buying something in a sh...

nice ... indeed the dialog is a hoot... poetic at times, and other times just marketing type... good historical info from the pictures.. RCV was a big corporation... even had a daycare on site for the staff's children... a nice touch even by today's standards. Portuguese sparkling wine, I had forgot...
