2024 Vintage Port declarations are starting

As you might recall, the beneficio for 2024 was 90,000 pipes.

Via Instagram, Sogrape has announced 2024 VP declarations for Sandeman and Ferreira

1995 Porto Souza Vintage Port

Opened for a book club which read Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, in which Vintage Port plays a role in forming connections between characters. Color: medium dark red tending toward burgundy and/or brick. Not opaque, but pretty dense. Nose: ripe red fruits - some raspberry, definitely some red currant...

1995 Porto Souza Vintage Port My wife's aunt's book club read the book Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, which contains several references to Vintage Port that create a theme of connection between characters. They asked me to come to their club meeting and have a short discussion about Port, and I thoug...

1 x 1964 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port. Haven’t had that one in a very long time. Let us know how it is when you open it. Yeah, they're pretty rare. You brought one up to Seattle not too long ago, and then I opened one for my 60th birthday, but those are the last 2 that I can remember. It's low e...

Re: Real Vinicola

I agree with Andy. I found a better picture on the internet, and I don't see anything on the label to indicate that it is a wood-aged Port. Ergo, it's bottle aged. It also doesn't say that it is Vintage or LBV or even Reserve. So it seems that it is most likely a basic Ruby Port. There are a couple ...

Re: Cork Lifespan

I have many bottles of Port in my cellar that are 50+ years old and still have the original corks. I've never heard of a Port producer recorking bottles every 20-30 years... given the longevity of Port, that would be a pretty significant expense.

Re: What have you opened this week?

I opened one of the new, limited, DR 40 Year Old Special Edition for Port Club last weekend... and it was corked. Makes me worry about the rest of the bottles, because there were only 250 made so the corks likely all came from the same batch.

Hi Gonçalo, welcome to FTLOP!

Does your family sell to many producers, or is it typically the same producer every year? (No need to name any producers if that's confidential!)

Decent enough, but I wouldn't rebuy it as its a bit watery & spirity at the same time.
Interesting. I wouldn't use either of those adjectives to describe it, so I wonder if your bottle was somehow off?

Re: What have you opened this week?

I managed to bribe Glenn over to the UK for a quick visit so we opened a bottle of Niepoort VV (1960s bottling). Glenn opened a bottle of DR Very Old White. And a wonderfully fun VV it was, too! It had me completely fooled because I did not detect any of the usual flavors that tip me off to a Niepo...

Seems like Small Potatoes to fake a $150 bottle. Understand what you are saying, Glenn, but an easy roll of the dice. Sure, and I wasn't implying that your bottles might be fake. As Eric said, the picture looks exactly correct. Of course... they just print the labels on an inkjet printer, so that's...

2 x Quinta de Brunheda Porto 40 Year Tawny....one goes to Mike W. Purchased at auction. What doofus would auction off those?? Aren't they private sale only bottles? Great find! Do they say 40+? Correct. Brunheda's commercial brand is Blackett. Anything labeled "Quinta de Brunheda" is tech...

DR 40 Year Old Tawny Port (bottled 2021) Opened for Port Club. This was one of the bottles I purchased after DR announced that they were no longer going to make a 40. I said I'd take everything they had left, which turned out to be 18 bottles. I opened another one from this purchase recently and wa...

Re: What are your TOP Ports tasted in 2025?

I always do lists for this and figure out the "threshold" once I've made the list. I'm guessing the wood-aged lists are all going to be cut off at 97 this year - it was a very good year! TWAIOA 100 - DR Barrel No. 150 V. V. Old Tawny (cask sample) 99 - DR L70 (cask sample) 98 - DR L70 (201...

Re: Portuguese Style Tawnies

Temperature is another factor that can really affect the flavor profile. I've heard of plenty of people refer to the "Douro bake," as the wines stored upriver classically (without refrigeration) get more heat than those stored in VNdG. As I recall (but I'm scratching my head), I think the...

1985 Croft VP Discovered that this was leaking when I re-arranged my fridges, so figured I'd open it. It's a very nice Port and doesn't seem at all damaged by the leaking. I'd say 92 points for this bottle. A very good VP. I’ve never had VA issues with it. Me either, at least not that I remember. B...

Re: Portuguese Style Tawnies

The larger the vessel used to age the slower the aging process becomes. Thus it retains its youthful characteristics longer. If you use smaller vessels the aging rate increases. That’s a relatively simple way of describing it as there are many ways to age a tawny. But hopefully it helps a little. S...

S. Leonardo 10 Year Old White Port I have a few of these and I've had them for a while, so I thought I should drink them faster so that they don't spend too long in bottle. They were bottled in 2020, and it feels like that bottle time is already starting to show. Very soft, and the profile lacks som...
