Thank you for the recommendations. Being fairly new to VP and especially older VPs I appreciate your thoughts. Ronnie, I've taken a note on the cheese you mentioned. Hopefully I can find it here in Toronto. I am going to one of the best cheese shops in the area so hopefully they have this or somethi...

1970 Dow - Decanting and cheese pairing advice

I'll be opening a 1970 Dow this Friday evening and would appreciate some advice on Decanting time. Any suggestions for a good cheese to accompany it? Stilton is the usual pairing but are there any others you feel goes well. Being an older VP would the Stilton be too much? Thank you all for your help.

JBL, this is great. I prefer sweeter styled fortified/dessert wines. So now I can focus on Bual and Malmsey.

I assume Rich in the standard class is a sweeter style?

Cheers,

styles of madeira

I a few bottles of Madeira in my modest cellar but have not opened one yet (I must bought off the tns listed). Can someone please list the different styles of Madeira? ie sweet/dry, grapes used etc. I know I have a few 375s of Leacocks Rainwater, a 500ml of H&Hs 95 Maderia and few others I do no...

I have ordered 5xGraham 375ml. Based on the number of 2000s still on the shelves here in Ontario I don't see an issue with the 03s being available later though I wanted to grab these 375s knowing they won't last long. I was seriously thinking of Dow, Niepoort and Vesuvio as top picks along with Goul...

Thanks Roy, it was a great experience for me. By the way, I did ask about decanting time (separate post), you just choose to ignore me!!!! :)

If I taste this again I'll be sure to give it more air. Thanks.

1983 Gould Campbell Vintage Port

$74.95cdn 750ml
Decanted approx 6 hours.

Dark inky purple/black color right out of the bottle. I was happily surprised by the color. I found the nose had black licorice and dark fruit. Excellent concentration and a silky mouthfeel. The finish was long with a little heat. 90-93pts (MW)

Best Corkscrew?

I've had some bad luck over the past few months with broken corks and was wondering what corkscrew everyone uses and how they like it?

Are there any port specific corkscrews (to handle the longer cork)?

Decanting Advice for 1983 Gould Campbell

I'll be taking this to friends home in a few days for dinner. I will not be able to decant prior to getting there (around 5pm). Should this be decanted immediately? What would be the optimal time to have it open. I always err on the side of too little time vs too much. Anyone taste this recently? WS...

I was under the impression that crusted port was made in the same style as VP though blended from 2 or more years. I am surprised the 94 grapes made it in the blend. I would have assumed crusted port would be non vintage years. I look forward to learning more about this myself through this thread. G...

Fred, interesting as I had the opposite reaction to the prices as a whole. The $130cdn for Fonseca and Taylor made me cry. I won't be buying these. I can still get the 2000 Fonseca for 99cdn so why pay 30 more for the 03?! Croft and Delaforce are way overpriced as well. Agreed some prices look good ...

Roy, my apologies as this was my post. I didn't even realize I wasn't logged on when it was posted. I didn't think anyone could post as a guest? Fred has created a separate post with a working link which is better anyway! I look forward to your comments on the pricing!!! Fonseca/Taylor $130cdn WOW!
