Re: Port Buying Decisions

Maybe could have include the name of the producer as an important factor... my 2 cents ;)

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Barbeito 2011 Tinta Negra is simply fantastic, around 35 euros for 500ml, it is a no brainer! Had 2005 Bual too, was nice but I think the Tinta Negra left a better impression which rarely occurs. 1978 Terrentez from D'Oliveras is always having a sweet spot for me. I opened these with a friend who do...

Re: Anyone interested in a Virtual Tasting?

I can participate. I'm not sure I'd agree on the overall quality getting better over the last 20 years. Definitively the selection got broader as small quintas got involve more. IMO Taylor's has been the most consistent and reliable if you like what they do while Noval is the definitive winner in te...

I would assume they bought Bulas for the stocks. Today this is how your position your Port business, old Ports.

Re: Madeira Ice Cream

A few years ago I adapted an iced nougat recipe to include Port. The result was quite delicious! Of course the texture is closer to frozen cream than ice cream or gelato, nonetheless, delicious! https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10153478481267191&set=a.389638917190 I'll try to see if I can fi...

Re: Drinking window of SQVP

There is a lot of info here about drinking window and expected peak of top VPs, but what about the SQVP? Specifically those released in non-vintage years by top producers, such as Bomfim, Vargellas, Malvedos, Fonseca Guimaraens (even if not technically SQVP)... I see the Symmington brands tend to r...

Re: perceptions of very old Port vintages

An interesting topic Glenn, So many things I'd like to say as well. I'll try to keep it short and concise. It is really hard to compare what will happen with Ports produced nowadays vs those we have been lucky enough to sample from the 30's 40's. A few facts to consider -Back in the days, Vintage wa...

Quinta da Trovisca LBV 2019. I really enjoy Quevedo's style of LBV, that Trovisca is similar, maybe a little less complex but still has that dry profile with ripe black currant flavours

Re: Recent Vintages of Port

I have lost a little the interest for young vintages. Maybe because I know if I buy them now they won't have time to age enough for me to enjoy them. The last vintage I bought was 3 half bottles of 2019 NIepoort. I'll taste some at the Essencia in 2 weeks and let's see, maybe I'll buy a few more hal...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Well, I opened my Kopke Superb Old Tawny this evening — and it’s f*****g corked!!’ I suppose at least that tells me it was probably bottled in the period 1977-1985. That is a shame... It reminds me of a Dalva 1952 Golden White bottled in 1978 I found a few years ago. I had so much expectation and b...

Re: Port palate migration

I'm mostly drinking wood age Port as it is more available. Here in Portugal, and when I was in Canada, aged Vintage Port are just not price properly in comparaison to the market. Else I think I would drink definitively more Vintage. For me Vintage rings more with a special occasion while the wood ag...

Re: Portuguese Company Launches Chestnut Flower Based Product to Replace Sulfite

I have not tried yet a wine vinified with this, but from what I read, it does leave some specific aromas to the wine due to its addition. It is something that is targetting small and "natural" wine producers as I don't think it will scale to hit massive productions that is where the real a...

Re: Will the real wine region please stand up?

It is indeed quite confusing! Assuming Wines of Portugal https://www.winesofportugal.com/en/discover/wine-regions/bairrada/ is up to date with the most recent information or https://www.cvbairrada.pt/en/regiao/ which is the region's website. I think the confusion is coming from the fact that on wine...

I did open a few nice ones from my cellar during the holidays... quick notes Niepoort Redoma Reserva Branco was still super fresh! Niepoort Batuta 2009 starting its plateau, beautiful deep and balanced. Niepoort Charme 2009 is fully matured, beautiful palate, altough the nose was a bit odd with butt...

a few nice bottles this year...

Niepoort Garrafeira 1987 is a good example of everything you want in a bottle.

I was gladdly surprised with Messias 40 white and Qta Estanho 50 Tawny.

Re: 1982 / 1983... is it really a split declaration?

The first vintage I bought was an 1982 Offley Boa Vista. I drank a lot of those! Around 20-25 years of age, many 1982 were at peak and very enjoyable to drink! Ramos Pinto, Ferreira and Offley were my favorite, but today I would not pay big money for those as I feel they have past their peak while t...

Niepoort 2000, still all on primary fruit with nice tannins, a sleeper.
Smith Woodhouse 1983, a nice mature Port still offering great concentration
LBV 2019 NIepoort, top LBV for the price, 14 euros at Continente :)
Casa Santa Eufemia White 2013, so fresh and balanced, was too easy to drink!

Re: What have you opened this week?

Glenn, a good part of Quevedo's Tawnys are aged in bigger barrels(balseiros) which really slows down the aging and preserve a fruitier style. I'm not a big fan of the young ones, but with age I do appreciate the freshness that they preserve. I've been going with the 2007 COlheita recently and it has...
