1991 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

The second bottle popped from the case+ of VP that I drunkenly won on Winebid a couple of months ago... but that's another story... [help.gif] The bottle seemed in excellent shape and the cork came out easily in one piece. The color is medium red, a bit hazy due to some very fine sediment that could...

1977 Graham's Vintage Port

I purchased this from an online auction recently for $55 and since it had obviously done some leaking in the past I decided to pop it open for my birthday the other night. The port was decanted for about 4 hours before consuming and I had a healthy portion left to drink the following day. With a lot...

I'll be there on Sunday the 3rd for the trade tasting - I'm sure I'll see you at the Quevedo table if you're there that day.

NV Croft 10 Year Tawny Port

Bright red in color with just a touch of bricking when held up to the light. The nose gives lots of dried fruits, raisin, cherry and prune with a nutty/caramel aspect that reminds me of pecan pie. On the palate there's lots of sweet fruit up front, Slightly creamy mouthfeel with the same caramel qua...

NV Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny

(Bottled 2012) Darkish amber with bright red highlights. The nose is on the fruity side for a 20 Year - strawberry jam,fig and cherry cough drop with a bit of sandalwood and caramel. Moderate sweetness starting with red berries and caramel and picking up a cinnamon-y spice on the midpalate. Hints of...

Re: 1994 Port recommendations

I'd say the Dow's is highly underrated. It's definitely still a baby but a real beauty of a VP that goes for a song compared to the Taylor or Fonseca. I'm a big fan of the Warre's as well. It has the structure to age long term but is drinking beautifully in its youth as well. Croft is another one th...

2001 Niepoort Colheita Port

Bottled in 2011. This has been open for 5 or 6 days now. Medium red in color with just a trace of tawny at on the rim. It took several days for this to come around. At first it was pretty muted on the nose and the palate and rather hot on the finish. Now the nose has resolved into notes of cherry an...

2003 Fonseca LBV Port

Unfiltered with a standard cork though not decanted and did not appear to have thrown any sediment. I drank this over a couple of weeks. Dark, opaque reddish-purple in color. The nose is smokey with baked cherry, blackberry and prune aromas. Full bodied on the palate with dark fruit - black cherry a...

Re: 1983 Vintage for a birthday present

If you haven't delved into Vintage Port at all as of yet I'd have to think that any 83 Vintage Port would be a revelation (assuming you wind up with a bottle that is in good condition). There are plenty of good "port style" wines out there but nothing that's quite the same as a true Vintag...

Re: Smith Woodhouse and Niepoort availability

I'm already jealous of all the bottles you guys have listed - SW35 and 47?? Niepoort 1900 Colheita?? OK, bottle envy aside, here on the NY market it seems pretty easy to find SW VP from 77 forward but I don't recall ever seeing any older vintages, at least not in a store. As far as Niepoort it seems...

1963 Warre's Vintage Port

From an informal gathering of east and west coast FTLOP'ers at the Palm in NYC on 3/9/12: The color was translucent with a touch of orange-pink in the center and a fully transparent rim. On the nose i got just a touch of candied fruit along with caramel, sandalwood and a little spirit. The palate is...

1980 Dow's Vintage Port

From an informal gathering of east and west coast FTLOP'ers at the Palm in NYC on 3/9/12. I was really looking forward to drinking this again after having it for the first time a year ago and loving it. It certainly didn't disappoint. The color is a dark, purplish burgundy - not quite as dark as I r...

1980 Fonseca Vintage Port

From an informal gathering of east and west coast FTLOP'ers at the Palm in NYC on 3/9/12. Light burgundy in color. On the nose I got notes of caramel, oak and candied cherry fruit - slightly medicinal in character but not in a bad way. Light, pretty maraschino cherry fruit and a touch of spice on th...

1980 Gould Campbell Vintage Port

From an informal gathering of east and west coast FTLOP'ers at the Palm in NYC on 3/9/12. Dark burgundy/purplish color. Along with the blueberry and cherry fruit I could pick up on the nose there was unfortunately something off on the nose. Some thought it bottle stink (it did dissipate slightly ove...

1995 Croft Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port

This was double decanted back into the rinsed bottle and tasted over 4 days. Dark purple, almost blackish like eggplant skin but showing some red on the rim. The nose offers blueberry and blackberry fruit with a mint-chocolate aspect giving it depth. Rich, sweet, plum and dark berry fruit dominates ...

2005 Quarles Harris LBV Port

I opened this after dinner last night with 5 other people and it was gone in less than 30 minutes (I guess they liked it [cheers.gif] ) so it didn't get much time to open up and I didn't get a chance to take a note on it. From memory it was a young-looking dark purple color with a nose of strawberri...
