2008 Niepoort Douro Dialogo.

$22 Cdn, 13% alc, good natural cork, decanted one hour. Cellared 4 yrs. Dumb nose at first but opens nicely, earthy, spice, cassis. Just slight bricking on the rim, not a lot of depth, light cherry color. Took almost 2 hrs to show anything. I noted good acidity and pepper finish, dried fruits, not a...

Just seen all your posts on Soalheiro. I am very surprised no-one here commented on your fine notes. Sad response.

2005 Quinta do Portal Douro Reserva

Decanted one hour, some light sediment noted, good natural cork. Bottle #2 of 2. The color is still very much deep, no sign of age. On the nose, red fruits, hint of port-like quality, blackcurrant to forefront, pepper, has a warm feel about it. Initial entry is dry and tannic, still a dense wine and...

2006 Quinta de Roriz Douro Prazo de Roriz.

My 3rd and last bottle, nicely cellared and has evolved well. Hint of warmth on the nose but good spice and black fruits.
Initial entry shows some sweetness this time, medium-bodied, good acidity. Cherry, blueberry, dusty, earthy, blackcurrant, hint of a portish quality. Good wine, solid.

2005 Encostas de Estremoz, Alentejano.

Here is my take on the 2005 Encostas. Light dull ruby-red. Soft aromatics, plum, cherry, some warmth here like the `04. Initial entry shows hints of ripe black fruits, integrated tannins, nice balance and finish. Held up very well over 3 days, showing some earthiness and roasted coffee, blackberry. ...

Cockburns Special Reserve Port.

I guess this is a ruby port? Chap at work showed me a bottle and the tag had some numbers with 04 underneath. What does this signify please?

Happy New Year to all [cheers.gif].

NV Fonseca Dry White Port

The Fonseca White Port was received much better I have to say, $21 Cdn, sweet, peach floral, nice and fresh on the palate.

NV Fonseca Bin 27 Port

The Fonseca Bin 27 Vintage Character Port was next in the line up. I was surprised how quite tannic it was, intense color here, cherry plum but not a big fruity finish in my mind. I have to think many new to port might turn to this wine? $23 Cdn. This tasting note is one of several related tasting n...

2007 Fonseca LBV Port

The 2007 Fonseca LBV showed a different character altogether. Lighter than the above, not as tannic either. More refined, rich palate entry, not that sweet, good balance, nice spice. Oh, $29 Cdn This tasting note is one of several related tasting notes. Click [here] to see the original note in conte...

Taylor 20 Year Old Tawny Port

Flight 2 started with the Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Old Tawny Port. WOTN for me but have to add I do not buy much tawny at all! Very appealing with figs, dates, caramel, quite delicious.

2005 Fonseca Quinta do Panascal Vintage Port

he `05 Fonseca Quinta do Panascal VP was pretty tasty too, first time I have sampled. $65, very good year, soft tannins, round fruits here, more advanced color, no violet on rim. Light plum and cherry, very approachable, flew off the shelf. This tasting note is one of several related tasting notes. ...

2011 Taylor Vintage Port

The last port sampled was the 2011 Taylor Fladgate VP. Have read lots of hoop-la about this wine. Nose was closed imo, but did find violets. Big, excellent structure here but so young. Blueberry, blackberry sweet entry, opulent. I know folks in Yellowknife who drink this already on a regular basis. ...

Event -- My evening with Jorge Ramos (Taylor partnership).

30 participants enjoyed a port tasting lead by Jorge Ramos. I was present to help with food and help set up etc. The evening began with a Croft Pink Port apperitif, the first pink port ever I was told. Think best to mix with Prosecco! The Fonseca White Port was received much better I have to say, $2...
