Re: Madeira Tech Data

Thanks, Eric. Do you have RS numbers for frasquiera wines as well? I believe they are classified by style without rigid RS ranges but would love to know otherwise.

Madeira Tech Data

I am studying for an exam and need help. Can anybody provide a source for official and verifiable data about ABV and RS levels in madeira? There is a lot of vague and varied information online. Are RS levels fixed or is classification by style? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Your plans for turkey pairing?

RWC Porto Moniz Verdelho before dinner- a great way to whet the appetite. I am about to try it with left-over pecan pie.

Re: 1870 Taylor-Fladgate Madeira Sercial

The Taylor Fladgate Malvasia 1915 and Bual 1897 that I mentioned in the post referenced by Andy were for sale at auction. I believe it was a Zachy´s sale but I am not sure. Perhaps Justin A. remembers more clearly.

Re: TN: 1900 D'Oliveira Malvasia Vintage Madeira

I am to blame for Steve's old note appearing again. I posted my TN by searching for the wine and then replying to his post.

Is there a better way to post a TN and have it in a string with other TNs for that wine?

Re: TN: 1900 D'Oliveira Malvasia Vintage Madeira

I had this over Christmas, decanted 24 hours. It stood up well to the dark chocolate dessert. Medium-plus intensity brown with tawny/amber rim. High intensity nose- walnuts, nail polish, dried fruits and light spice. Medium-plus body and acid. Caramel, nuts, lighter nail polish with some dried orang...

Verdelho Yields and Trellising

Does anybody have reliable information about per-hectare yields for Verdelho on the island, both for latada and any other trellising systems? Do they generally prune Verdelho to canes or spurs?

Greatest Madeira (Regardless of Price)

I would love to know everybody´s all-time favorites- if you had to pick just one. (Has this already been done on the site?)

Re: TCA

I am struggling to find a plausible explanation why there would be fewer bottles of madeira with TCA than other wines. As Eric points out, shippers have not traditionally blown the budget on high-quality corks. I think that there are probably just a many bottles of madeira with TCA as a percentage b...

Re: TCA

I am adding a recent bottle of D´Oliveiras 1969 Sercial to the TCA list- subtle but there. It had light, typical mustiness plus noticeably muted fruit. I did not try polyethylene. Has anybody done that with madeira?

Taylor Fladgate madeira

I just saw two bottles of madeira by Taylor Fladgate for sale- a Malvasia 1915 and a Bual 1897. I did not know that they had been involved in madeira production. Could somebody share the history?

Re: Shipping Madeira in April/May?

Is it a know fact, Roy, or oft-repeated hyperbole? The wine industry is clouded with spurious information (and the gatekeepers, in general, are failing by circulating information without questioning it, but that is different topic). If this is a fact, please put me out of my misery and post a link f...

Re: Shipping Madeira in April/May?

That is a remarkably conclusive statement you have made, Roy. Do you have any science to back it up? Here is a link to a good article on the effects of heat on wine in the bottle: http://www.wineperspective.com/STORAGE%20TEMPERATURE%20&%20AGING.htm There is, unfortunately, no mention of madeira ...

Re: Shipping Madeira in April/May?

April is probably a good month to ship wine in the U.S. I think, however, that people are overstating the case a little. Any wine will be affected by high temperatures and I believe that includes madeira- perhaps the most stable of all wines due to extended oxidative aging and fortification. Buy two...

Brown Glass Madeira

I just tried the 1937 D´Oliveiras Sercial and thought the brown glass bottle deserved comment. One of the reasons I can imagine for brown glass instead of the more common green glass is that it blocks more UV light than green glass. If this is the reason the shipper chose brown glass, I think it mak...
