Re: Is Port wine a perishable commodity?

What's the oldest VP anybody has had that still was showing well? Have had vintage port back to around 1860's and it was fine. I thought orange juice and pork bellies were traded as commodities, yet they are finished products. I probably didn't define commodity perfectly. OJ and pork bellies are st...

Re: Is Port wine a perishable commodity?

If you google the definition of perishable commodity, you will find that it means a commodity that might spoil after a week of proper handling and shipping conditions. So from the perspective of perishability, wine is not perishable until it's opened, except for Madeira, which is never by definition...

Thank you, Rune. Awesome TN. It's not often that I hear about places getting the wine so right but the food so wrong. I love reading notes that have stories incorporated into them.

Re: Top 10 hotels for wine lovers

I've heard that the wines of Buçaco are supposed to be phenomenal, and you can't get them stateside. A night there would be worth it just for the experience of trying something from their cellar, I would think. Anybody here ever try any of these wines?

Hockey for me, of course. Alpine skiing events are fun, too. The Super G looked insanely tough. Snow conditions don't look too good, and we get to see how they handle it.

Re: FTLOP Tasting: Pre-2000 LBV's

John, I'm just thinking aloud like a trader here, and was being more tongue in cheek here than anything else. I'm just incredibly surprised at how crazy the LBV market is, that's all. Sorry if it came across otherwise. Enjoy.

Re: FTLOP Tasting: Pre-2000 LBV's

John, there has to be a house that will let you scalp those LBVs. The fact that there is a 1991 Dow VP will probably not help you get comparable hammer prices, though, unfortunately. If you can get a similar price on their 1989 LBV (check out wine-searcher, yikes), you are good to go. With Murcas, i...

Re: FTLOP Tasting: Pre-2000 LBV's

Those were two thoughts that crossed my mind as well. I just wondered if there was something magical about this property in its past life that I didn't know. Given the prior mention of the ridiculous bids on LBVs at auction, I have to wonder if someone is trying to corner the market on old LBVs, pri...

Re: FTLOP Tasting: Pre-2000 LBV's

I saw 1988 Quinta dos Murcas LBV was just auctioned at the Chicago Wine Company. One batch of four bottles went for $400, and a second batch of six bottles (one bottle with label missing) went for $400, also. Anybody know what the story is with that particular LBV? I know that Esporao of Alentejo fa...

TN: 2010 Quinta do Portal Muros de Vinha Tinto Douro

$7 at Costco. Pop and pour. Floral notes on the nose and the palate. Prominent minerality. Nice acidity. Quite elegant. Maybe just a touch of VA, nothing too obnoxious. Day two is a little better than day one, but it was still fine when I opened it. Blend is 40% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Franca, and ...

Re: Dirk's take on Baga and other topics

Luis Pato has some cool wines with this grape, though I have not tried anything beyond the Vinhas Velhas offering price wise for table wines. I did get to try his AM Rosado, a dessert wine made from Baga. AM stands for Abafado Molecular, which denotes the process through which the wine is made. I wa...

Re: TN: NV Broadbent Madeira Malmsey 10 Years Old

I got one from Costco awhile back and it was a lot as Miguel described his previous experiences. The finish was very clipped, I remember. Too bad, because it was marked down to $26 a bottle towards the end.

Might not be what you are looking for, but Cellar Tracker has this one on file: http://www.cellartracker.com/classic/wine.asp?iWine=573154 Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is this wine mentioned on CT? No mention of the word Colheita there. Is it the year this was bottled, as opposed to a singl...
