Re: The Rise & Fall of the Euro

112.50 is the level to watch here on the FXE chart (not sure how much the price differs from the actual Euro). It did breach this level for a couple of days before retreating back below it when our stock market cratered in late August. I see downward pressure over the very near term, looking at the ...

Re: The Rise & Fall of the Euro

The Euro looks like it wants to go higher, given that the Fed is more reluctant to raise rates than previously assumed. 112.50 seems to be the resistance level to watch on the FXE chart. Looking further out, 120 seems like the next big resistance level.

Re: TN: 2007 Pera Manca Alentejo red

That sounds like a special wine for a special occasion. Happy Anniversary indeed, Rune. I found a fact sheet for the 2010 vintage, and that year was 55% Trincadeira and 45% Aragonez, and aged 18 months in 3000L oak vats. It's even a DOC wine, as opposed to the Alentejano that I see so often. http://...

Re: Crasto's new release: Superior Syrah

There really hasn't been. For the most part table wine in the Douro was a village level, at best, quality level for consumption by locals. Not much was sold abroad. It really didn't start coming round until the early to mid 1990's. It's still a relatively young product and IMO they are still sortin...

Re: Crasto's new release: Superior Syrah

I wasn't wild about the Cedro do Noval. Jam city, baby. I just think this region is too special and unique to be screwing around with international varietals. Leave that stuff to Alentejo. I remember it as having a pine nose and jammy as well. Was a little disappointed. Between international variet...

Re: The Rise & Fall of the Euro

We're seeing quite a narrow range of movement the past few weeks from 1.085 to 1.105 lately. Just looking at a weekly chart, this appears to be a consolidation pattern happening. The upside resistance is at 1.125 or so. Keep an eye on that level. The downside support appears to be around 1.03. That...

Re: The end of wine tasting notes?

Notes can be helpful in a number of ways. If there are descriptors that I don't care for, I know to pass. Some notes can tell me I need to wait on it or drink it now. Some notes convey an inspiration and compel one to seek it out and try it. And yes, I don't connect with some notes because I'm not i...

2013 Lagar de Darei Branco Dao

This has recently made it to shops around Chicago. It can be found for $12 or so at Binny's. It has an oxidative note that I enjoy along with honey and apples (hmm, Rosh Hashannah wine, maybe), and a bit of stone fruit. This makes for a very solid house white. Grapes are as follows: Encruzado (35%),...

Re: The Rise & Fall of the Euro

Tsipras and the parliament were in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I think ultimately the Greeks need to be able to print their own money, but the pain is up front as opposed to being delayed by this action. I'm surprised they weren't even prepared to return to the drachma as all ...

Re: Outrageously priced bottles

I don't know what it is about port, but it has to be one of the most inefficiently priced wines out there. Plenty of overpriced bottles, and a fair amount of underpriced bottles if you look hard enough, and not nearly as much stuff priced at fair value. As for BevMo and Total Wine, that's the Phoeni...

2013 Maria da Graca VDP

This is a VDP from Beiras, with 80% Alfrocheiro and 20% Alicante Bouschet. Only 11% ABV. Lots of minerality on this one. The fruit profile was more towards dried strawberries. Definitely had the floral Alfrocheiro profile, also. This wine really reminded me of the one Poulsard from Jura that I tried...

Re: TN: 2012 Quinta da Aveleda Charamba

It's $8 at Binny's here. Unfortunately, a lot of stuff here has the extra layer of cost to get here from the importer's warehouse out east. I just have to patiently wait until Binny's gets tired of looking at its Portuguese wines on its shelves and hope that I am in the store when it happens.

Re: What Douro wine have you purchased this week...

I popped and poured one of the Burmesters last night. This is definitely a value at $8. Great minerality and dark fruits happening here, certainly more happening with this wine than I would expect at this price point. All Chicagoland area board members, head out to your local Binny's to see if any a...
