Re: Basic Portugal recommendations

Adding to my post above and agreeing with other comments: --I second Eric re Bairro do Avillez. Very good. --Also second Will re Fronteira Palace. Worth the visit, you can get there easily by Uber. --Aqui Ha Peixe. I mentioned it and am a big fan, and sounds like Eric has had good experience there a...

Re: Basic Portugal recommendations

Evora is worth the visit. If you are willing/interested to put some kms on and explore a bit further, Marvao is worth a visit. It's an old walled city on a hill near the Spanish border. There was a decent hotel there some years ago. Much smaller than Evora, so it's not a place to go for "things...

Re: Old, but free way to learn Portuguese

I've done the Pimsleur level 1, on my third pass through it now. I find the method pretty effective, and would probably have pretty good retention if I didn't take 3-4 month breaks every time I listen to a few lessons. I figure if I keep going through it, hopefully a bit more will stick each time. S...

Another option is www.portuguesewithcarla.com

There are quite a few free situational lessons on there.

Re: Where to stay in Lisbon?

I've been to the Pateo - Bairro do Avillez for drinks at least. It's a cool place with a good atmosphere. We'd already eaten dinner, but the friend I was with who lives in Lisbon also says it is a great place to eat. It's a good place to have on the list.

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

Super interesting and useful thread. I will retire in Portugal, at least part time, for sure. I have a house there now (bought land in 2013 and finished construction on a house in 2016). In 2016-2017, my wife and kids spent most of the summer there (I go when work allows), though last year my oldest...

Re: Where to stay in Lisbon?

I stayed at the Lisboa Carmo hotel in Chiado in December. I like the location, the hotel was nice, and a simple breakfast was included.

Was around 125/night I think.

Chiado is a pretty good place to be on foot, in my opinion, uber will readily cover you as well.

NY Times 52 Places to Go in 2017

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/travel/places-to-visit.html?_r=0 #25 Comporta, Portugal Well, I'm not sure how to interpret that Detroit, MI is #9, but we've been going to Comporta since 1998 and are big fans. I'd be just as happy to not have it on this list to keep it off the radar, but tha...

Re: February trip to Lisbon

Two restaurants I like in Chiado (one maybe more in Barrio Alto)...perhaps walkable, but maybe a bit of a healthy walk. Cab might be better if you wanted to try one of these. Taberna da Rua das Flores--very small and usually a wait, not sure if they take reservations so you might want to call ahead ...

Re: Top hotels in PT

I'm partial to Comporta, where they list Casas Na Areia and Sublime. I've stayed at Sublime and it is very nice. Never stayed at Casas Na Areia. But I've been going to this area for years. We have typically rented a house there. My family will be there for 6 weeks this summer. I will be there for tw...

Re: Lisboa before the Port Harvest Tour (1) ?

Yeah, we've used Google Maps or Waze very successfully there. They pretty much get it right. But you do have to be careful, as sometimes the time it takes the english voice to torture out the "take a right on Rua Julio Cesar Machado" (or some other lengthy street name, of which there are m...

Re: Lisboa before the Port Harvest Tour (1) ?

I don't know about places for Fado, but a few restaurants I like (these are both in the Chiado district of Lisbon, which is a cool area to stay and wander around in the evening): Aqui Ha Peixe -- excellent fish restaurant. I've known the owner/chef, Miguel, and his wife Mafalda for a dozen years or ...

Re: March Madness: The next Port Buying Op - details.

Finally got my act together and ordered 5 cases.

1 case each of 03, 04, 05 Rio Bom
1 case S Leo 20 year (I've always regretted not getting more of the 20 year Duque, don't want to have such regrets...)
1 case mixed of 10,30,40,60,100 year

Can't wait. Thanks for the hard work on this Roy.
