Tawny vs. Colheita

Well todays our anniversary; two full years of conjugal bliss. I just returned from the nearby BevMo and boy, do I have questions ! I was pleased to see them stocking more Vintage bottles such as Croft 63, Cockburns 83, etc. I had a hard time choosing between the 66 Krohn Colheita, the 40 year Presi...

the wet kind of musty

Thanks for everyones help in determining I got a corked bottle. Alex, the aroma was the wet kind of musty smell although, the wine tasted OK. Certainly not revolting, we drank it. We mostly agreed the wine had little or no taste. My preference for tawnies grows stronger ! Dan

Musty Port

This past Sunday we hosted a Super Bowl viewing at the house and pushed a few " fence sitters " all the way over to the wonders of Port. We drank all the Ferreira 20 Yr., and the Rocas '70 Colheita. I had Cockburns '83 decanting when the guests insisted we drink it now ! It'd been given ab...

Krohn Colheita

A local shop offers '58 and '66 Krohn Colheitas at around $100 per bottle. Reviewing Roy's tasting notes, the '60 and '65 seem pretty good. Any thoughts on the '58 or '66 ? Thank You !

Porto Pocas Colheita 1970

This particular wine was bottled in 2004 and carries this wording which I'm sure is familiar to the experienced Portmen; "...........and having in consideration its excellent quality th I.D.V.D.P. allow the indication of the vintage year on the label. " Are the grapes from the 1970 harvest...

Colheita prices

Interesting. Can you briefly explain why grapes from 1970 wouldn't neccesarily create a better Colheita as well as a great Vintage Port ? These bottles are down at the neighborhood Bevmo. Offley '85 $ 45, Krohn '94 $ 25, Pocas '92 $ 30, Pocas '70 $60. ( I jumped the gun and bought the '70 before I h...

A visit to the liquor store

Well, I just returned from the liquor store where I found these Colheitas on the shelf. Does anyone have any opinions or thoughts on these wines. Thank You ! Offley '85, Krohn '94, Porto Pocas '82, Porto Pocas '70. I'm guessing that the excellent vintage years for bottle aged port are also excellent...

Is there something wrong with me ? !!

From the earlier post you'll see I'm relatively new to the pleasures of Port. During the last month I've tasted '77 Warre, '83 Grahams, '99 Q.do Crasto LBV, '86 Grahams Malvedos and last night, to celebrate our new daughters birth, a '77 Taylor. They are all lovely but, I think I prefer the 20 yr. T...

"corked"

Corked is a term I've seen quite often on the Port sites. I know its not good. My understanding is the wine is spoiled and the cork is to blame. I know much more about Sammy Sosa's corked baseball bat so, would someone please tell me more about corked bottles and how to spot one? Recent Port experie...

Concerning the decanting, I understand the idea but unclear on the method. Standing the bottle upright will start the sediment moving down through the wine right away, correct ?

Thank You for the warm welcome and helpful replies ! Today I was able to find a local supply of the 1994 Quinta do Vesuvio. No more chugging from the bottle !

New to Port and FTLOP

A few years ago at Thanksgiving, was served a wonderful glass of a liquid I'd never experienced before. Though I like details, never did get them on this splendid juice. Months later, trying to revisit that exquisite taste I numbly tried a $ 20 LBV and was naturally disappointed. So, I tried to get ...
