Re: Blandy's 4 pack offering
I got to try these when Chris Blandy was out in So Cal on March 5th. Unfortunately there was a miscommunication between the importer and the wine shop. And the shop was told that these were $139.99 *per bottle*. I wasn't going to say anything with Mr. Blandy present, but my dominating thought was th...

Just "recanted" the bottles using t-corks and am waiting for the sealing wax to cool before I pack them.

If I have interested friends, but they don't have any appropriate Madeiras, can there be an adopt-a-bottle option?

Intertest Check for a Madeira tasting in Southern California
Just checking to see if there's interest in doing a local Madeira tasting in Southern California. I was thinking, to keep things simple, I could host. (I'm near Long Beach.) The only expenses would be food and renting glasses, if we decided that would be necessary. For food, we could cater dinner in...

Re: Madeira Tasting in San Francisco - May 17-19, 2013
What? Does that mean you are not going to cook? It happens that the next event I'm hosting will be a pasta-making party as well as a tasting, so cooking will happen, too. :-) For that the theme is merely "wines that go with pasta." Madeira-wise, since it's an introduction for my friends, ...

Re: Madeira Tasting in San Francisco - May 17-19, 2013
Thanks for doing all this, Roy. I'll say the Italian restaurant is no issue for me, because with two full days of tasting fortified wine, I'd be fine completely passing on wine with dinner. Also, all you are going through makes me think that I'd be happy to host a tasting in So Cal. Then the only is...

Re: Madeira Tasting in San Francisco - May 17-19, 2013
So I'd like to plan my trip, get the time off work, etc. From reading this thread, there will be a tasting on Saturday May 18th and one on Sunday May 19th. Is that right? If so, what's the plan for the 17th? (I.e., why is it one of the dates?) I'd like to know if I can fly in late on the 17th becaus...

Re: Madeira Tasting in San Francisco - Tentative for May 2013
I think I can make both for the weekend of the 17-19th in May.
And I think the 1862 D'Oliveiras Sercial I was planning on should meet the minimum bar.

Re: Getting a bottle shipped from England
Roel, thank you for the offer, but after some back and forth, I found someone who will be coming out to California from London in December. The twist to all this is that it's a coworker of the person whom the bottle will be a present for. I have a feeling this may turn out to not be a surprise gift....

Getting a bottle shipped from England
I've just purchased a bottle of Greek brandy (a particular bottling of Metaxa) from a private party in England, but they can't/won't ship outside the UK.
Any thoughts on how I can get it out to California, intact?

Re: Winebid's Pricing on Barbeito?!
My guess is that the seller asked someone to give a value for those wine. Said someone searched on wine-searcher, took the highest prices ($999, $799) and rounded. Seller then lists wines on winebid for those amounts. It seems silly to me, but my view is skewed - my purchases from winebid have had a...

Port for a Madeira drinker
So... I like Madeira. Opened a 1962 Barbeito Malmsey on Saturday. Mmmm...
But I have yet to have a Port that has totally "wowed" me. What would be my best bet? A 20 year tawny? Any particular ones?
