Re: 2019 Portuguese wines: With 2 weeks left, what were your favorites?

A tie between Niepoort Charme 2004 and Chryseia 2000 - both showing beautifully. Biggest disappointment was probably Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2001: overoaked, tiring and not worth the hype. A good decision to use coravin on it, so we could move on to something more exciting after one glass ...

Re: The 1931 Noval that wasn't meant to be

I had a similar experience with a Croft 45 once. For sale for a considerable amount at my then 'go to' wine store, but with such a bad fill level and visibly still leaking that I never dared to take the risk. Always had a look at the bottle when I came in though...

It was Graham's 1972 single harvest back in April. For us in business it was 1986 single harvest, which I was not too fond of.

True. So glad I bought 3...
Good thing is we're going to Holland tomorrow for holiday, so I'll take these with me to stick in the cellar and forget about for the coming years.

I paid NZD $58 for it, which is about $40 USD. Don't know about pricing in Europe, NZ prices tend to be a bit higher.

TN: Niepoort Poeirinho Bairrada 2013

100% old vine Baga. Redcurrant and cranberry nose. Mineral and and floral notes on the palate, but very demanding: quite lean with piercing acidity and high (though fine) tannin. Not particularly joyful to drink on its own now, and not quite sure it has the complexity (yet) to stand up to many foods...

2011 Niepoort Batuta. Didn't make any notes, but thought it was a lovely wine - albeit quite ripe and soft for Niepoort.

Re: What was the BEST Portuguese wine you consumed in 2016?

Red: 1998 Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa was lovely, as well as 2006 Niepoort Charme. Two completely different wines, both beautiful in their own right. As for whites, the 2 that impressed me most are both from Niepoort: 2013 Coche and 2007 Redoma Reserva. Ronald I've still got a bottle of the...

As they are reasonably priced: buy 1 of each, taste and see which you like best. If you like both, buy 6 of each.

Forgot to mention the "Passa" white from Quinta do Passadouro. Fresh, well-made, very affordable.

Re: Douro Whites - What are your go to's?

Another one for Casa Ferreirinha, and Niepoort of course (couldn't you buy online?), but for value I've always found Lavradores de Feitoria to be very good, as well as the whites of Real Companhia Velha. Contraste by Conceito is also relatively good value.

Re: 1976 Ports

Mahmoud, I understand you've read some things on their website. Let me make this very clear so there is no misunderstanding. The 1976 was made with a small percentage of grapes that were adultered. That is not debatable, it happened. It happened on occasion back then in the Port trade and does not ...

Re: 1976 Ports

1976 FG is a totally different color. It is more of a dark brown and it smells and tastes more along the lines of a PX Sherry than Port. When you have it side by side with any other older VP it stands out like a wolf in a herd of sheep. It's a fantastic example of an adulturated Port. It's also som...

TN: 2009 Niepoort Batuta

Much better than a previous bottle (which was very jammy and port-like). Sweet cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry, with nicely integrated oak, firm (but ripe) tannin and lovely spicy flavours. Big, for sure, but well-balanced due to tannin and acidity levels. A nice surprise. 92 points
