Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

I think it has to spend 20 years in cask. You've got the right idea, though, with the number 21...auspicious! Enjoy!

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

1922 D'Oliveiras Boal (no bottling date, seems like 199x bottling) 1937 D'Oliveiras Sercial (no bottling date, seems like 199x bottling) I have had both and both were memorable. Alex Liddell calls the '22 a "reference wine" - 5*. I am saving my '22 for my retirement on 1 / 27 / 2022! Can'...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

1993 D'Oliveras Boal I thought I had purchased a bottle some years ago, but I can't seem to find my notes (and in doing so, I see my journal is waaaaay out of date). I see that we tasted it on the 2016 Fortification tour, but opted for the '92 malvazia among other selections. The wine is still openi...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Eric,
What is your opinion of the '77 Terrantez?

I had a bottle quite some time ago, but I do not remember much. It was my first sampling and my expectations were high due to the rarity. I do remember being underwhelmed.

Re: 1955 Domaine et Banyuls Grand Cru

My research had indicated that the 1949 was a better vintage, but this was, of course, an anniversary/commemorative purchase. Thank you for the information.

1955 Domaine et Banyuls Grand Cru

I have purchased this wine as a gift for a friend celebrating a 65th birthday (hence the 1955 vintage). I did some research on the style and noted it to be a bit of a cross between port and Madeira, therefore suitable to the celebrant's taste. Does anyone have any information or helpful comments reg...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Thanks, Glenn E.. A good suggestion, especially if a smaller contingent at the dinner table. I have a 1922 D'Oliveras Boal that I was saving for my 65th birthday in 2022. I have had the 1922 twice before and it was stellar. My wife and I also opened a 1978 D'Oliveras Boal in in 2018 for our 40th ann...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

It's been a while since I last posted. Hope all are well. I decided to make a splurge and this 1863 Blandy's caught my eye. The wine purveyor offered a two-ounce pour and my wife and I thought it was spectacular. That was back in March before the shutdowns. I just got back to the wine shop and made ...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Gary, Is the 1922 as good as I remember? I have been able to acquire this wine on a couple of occasions. I got the first bottle at an absolute steal and it was superb (though my overall Madeira experience was very limited at the time). I think Liddell rates it 5*..."a reference wine". When...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

1978 D'Oliveras Bual As I mentioned before, we had bought this on the Fortification Tour a couple of years ago with the intention of opening it on our 40th wedding anniversary (August 12, 1978). We were traveling to NYC for a show and there was no way I was going to get a flask of this though TSA in...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Eric, How did you find the '86 FdP. I have one stashed. Gary, I also have the '68 stashed. Your thoughts on it. When we were in Madeira in 2016 for the Fortification Tour, we bought a 1978 D'Olivera's Boal (among others, many of which are consumed). We were married in 1978, so we will be opening it ...

TN:1875 Camara de lobos

Last Thursday, I was at the Madeira oasis that is Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa. I finished my meal with a tasting of 1875 Camara de Lobos and was not disappointed...my oldest Madeira yet...very smooth...much less acidity than expected...less sweet than malmsey/less acidic than bual... Teriffic second ...

Re: Any experience with these? Bought at auction.

Frank, The 1957 Barbeito should be good if it was anything like the 1957 Barbeito bual that started my fascination with, and love for, Madeira. I bought the 1957 as a 50th birthday present for myself (DOB Jan 1957). I was bowled over by the power of the aroma. I loved the flavor, but had no basis fo...

A Mystery Wine No Longer.

I was at the local gourmet market this week and was sifting through their ample wine area. Since my first stop is usually the port/madeira/dessert wine area, I found this very interesting, and rather affordable, half-bottle of dessert wine almost immediately. The label was very distinctive and the 1...

Re: Mystery wine - is this a port or something else?

I did as Moses suggested and popped the cork.
:winepour:

But since the wine was, as Daniel indicated, not a port, I will post my comments in the Portuguese table wine forum.
