Re: Buying opportunity

Were there other buyers for the port? Were they selling non-fortified wine too? I met the seller on the Dutch marketplace, he was selling lots of Q. do Vesuvio (from 1989 to 2008, all at the same price of €245 per box) and I bought the 1994. We got talking and I helped him through the jungle of the...

1980 Smith-Woodhouse VP

I have had this two times in the last months, both the corks didn't came out in one piece (even with the durand), as the corks were pretty much saturated. Fortunately both the bottles turned out to be fine! The colour is brique red, more like a tawny, we just took a sip: the wine seems to be thin, s...

1997 Taylor VP

Cork came out in one piece (Durand) and was almost clean, almost no saturation. Beautiful dark rubyred colour. Very young port with some herbs and sweet fruit. On the nose some not-integradet alcohol. Just left it a day to open up. Second and thirt day it all came together: Lovely nice integrated yo...

1997 Graham VP

Cork came out in one piece with the Durand (got it last year and love it!) The colour is dark Bordeaux red with a slight lighter rim. It's rather fresh, very fruity, sour cherries, not cloying and less sweet and slightly thinner than the Graham Malvedos 1995 I had some days before. Second and third ...

Re: Buying opportunity

So it has been three years now, since I asked for and gratefully received your advice about the cellar mentioned above and finally I have collected most of the cases/bottles I asked for. As mentioned before, the family is totaly unknown in this world, so searching for the wright bottles in a crowded...

1991 vintage port

Last week I drank a bottle of 1991 Taylor Vargellas VP. The first days it showed well, I liked it best on day two, but after the third day I didn't enjoy it that much anymore, it fell somewhat apart. I also didn't like it as much as f.i. the Taylor 1995 and 1997 which I had this summer also. That go...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I've never had any of this in my cellar and the clearance price was ridiculous, so I bought 3. I'll try one in a few weeks. I'll be interested to hear how they're doing. I bought 14-15 of them about 12-13 years ago when (IIRC) the importer either went out of business or they changed importers, so t...

Re: Buying opportunity

Thank you for your advise Phil, it is very tempting to buy the whole bunch, but also a woman has to make choices once and awhile ;-) As up to now I've asked the family to look for: Fonseca 1977, 1992, 1994 Taylor 1994, 1997 Graham 1997 Vesuvio 1994 Smith Woodhouse 1977, 1980 Ramos Pinto 1994 Dow 198...

Re: 1977 Warre vintage port

Yesterday evening I took the bottle to a diner with some friends. No one liked it, somebody said "cork" immediately.
So I guess you are wright, just a pitty.

1977 Warre vintage port

Last evening I opened a 1977 Warre VP which I bought some years ago from a private cellar. Unfortunately the cork was thoroughly wet with a lot of crysthallization on top. Pulled the cork out with an ordinary corkscrew in one piece, as if the cork was to small for the bottle. The color was very pale...

Re: Buying opportunity

Thomas V. and Al B. are pretty much spot on, but I will reiterate what Al B. said because it's important. The '94 Fonseca, Taylor's and Quinta do Vesuvio are head and shoulders above the other offerings you listed. Assuming that the bottles are in good condition and the fills are good, I would buy ...

Re: Buying opportunity

The above advice is all perfect on a per wine basis. Great to have this knowledge, but then there is the matter of the holdings and how much to pay. If an estate, the family is likely to just want to liquidate in as easy a way as possible. I know I would not want to be selling off the best portions...

Re: Buying opportunity

Thank you gentlemen for your advice! Much appreciated!
The family is going to make an inventory of the cellar today and I hope to hear from them soon about the content of it.
I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Buying opportunity

I am probably going to have a buying opportunity of some very fine VP of a deceased portlover. It's not clear what the total content of the cellar is and there hasn't been a price setting, but could some of you give me advise of wether I should buy some of these (if provenance and price are good) as...
