Re: What have you opened this week?

Thanks for the tip Roy - I'll try to clear the Continente shelves of Portal 1999 - my kids, wife and parents in law can all give me a bottle for Christmas! I passed by Vinologia this morning, and saw a display of Portal 2006 with a prominent quote from a certain Roy Hersh (or possibly a misquote, be...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Quinta do Portal 1999 - very pleased with this bottle, and it only cost €16.49 at Continente (probably the largest Portuguese supermarket).

Re: Your favorite Lodges in Gaia?

Whenever I am in Porto (which is quite often - 4 weeks last year, 6 this year), I try to get to a Port lodge every couple of days - the deal that I have with my wife is that I am free to go, but I have to take my son (who inevitably says "not Daddy Bottles.....again!"). I think that I have...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Ramos Pinto 1982 LBV - bitter disappointment. One dimensional and performed a lot worse than a basic ruby - and had a peculiar smell a bit like tobacco ash. Worried because I have a lot of bottles of Ramos Pinto VP and LBV that were cellaraed upright during decades...hoping that that isn't why the ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Sandeman 2000 Vau Vintage - €18.75 from a Portuguese supermarket - couldn't believe the quality for the price - really pleased with this one, and will go back and buy a lot more in a couple of days Ramos Pinto 1982 LBV - bitter disappointment. A couple of old but non-premium Ramos Pinto ports:
- Quinta da Urtiga (very pleasant ruby)
- Quinta Sao Domingos (tawny with no indication of age).

Re: What have you opened this week?

1982 Ramos Pinto LBV - very sweet, almost syrupy; haven't discovered much in the way of distinguished flavour yet, but still looking for it....nothing at all like the 2005 LBV. 2004 Croft LBV - this is the third bottle that I have opened, and the first time that it has really worked for me - tasting...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

6x Tesco's Finest 2000 Vintage (in 375ml bottles) [Tesco is the biggest supermarket chain in the UK] Tasted a bottle last week and was very happy with it, so bought a few more today. Found them in a couple of Tescos, but they aren't mentioned on the website. I am finding the whole Port wine at Tesco...

Re: What have you opened this week?

A bottle of Ramos Pinto....its a very sweet (cloyingly so) tawny port that is actually quite pleasant. It is an old bottle that only has 2 words (other than Ramos-Pinto, Porto and Portugal) on the label: Alourado-Adamado. My in-house Portuguese translator (wife) wasn't too helpful - she says that Al...

Re: Odd Looking 1957 Vintage Bottle

Ever see this bottle before? I know the pictures are crappy. I believe that I actually have a bottle of this very same wine. We inherited a house in porto with a wine cellar. When clearing out/tidying up the cellar I found a bottle very similar to this one more or less discarded among some empty bo...

Re: Miscellaneous Port questions

Thank you all - help greatly appreciated. I will try some of the other cellars over the next 2 days (the deal I have with my wife is that I can spend all the time in the cellars that I like....as long as I take my 3 year old son with me! that reduces 'daddy bottle' time to a couple of hours a day at...

Miscellaneous Port questions

The members of this forum have been great in helping on my previous questions. I'm hoping that you may be able to give me a few pointers again... This week I find myself in Porto. My wife was born here, and we come to visit her family 4 or 5 times a year...in fact we have a second home here and I ju...

Re: Decanting Time for 1997 Graham's VP

Going off on a slight tangent.... If you live in Brighton and you bought the port from a Brewery shop, I'm guessing that you may have been along to Harvey's in Lewes....is that right? I have been meaning to get along to Harvey's for a while down, but haven't found the excuse to drive down from Londo...

Re: 1985 vintages: Dow's, Warre's or Croft?

All, Many thanks for your help and advice. I just got back from Davy's with a bottle of Warre's 1985. There is snow on the ground in London today, and I was really worried that I might slip in the road and break the bottle when I walked home, but got back in one piece. Looking forward to trying this...

1985 vintages: Dow's, Warre's or Croft?

I wasn't sure if this should be posted in the Port Forum or in Port Basics. As I'm a noob in this forum I suppose that it is safer to stick with the Port Basics... So this is the situation: On Tuesday I will be celebrating my parent's Silver Wedding anniversary with them. Today I figured that a bott...

Re: João Nicolau de Almeida - November's Guest Corner Host

João Well, having said that I would like very much to visit your cellar!!!! It would be a pleasure - it isn't enormous (a few hundred bottles), but among the vintages between '70 and '94 it does have some unusual wines that I haven't seen anywhere else, for example: 1937 and 1962 colheitas, Port Nob...

Re: João Nicolau de Almeida - November's Guest Corner Host

Hello João. I was very pleased to see that you are a guest host on here. Ramos Pinto has a special place in my cellar and also in my family history - my wife's godfather was a salesman for Ramos Pinto, as was his father before him. Although he is no longer with us, his cellar lives on in Porto, and ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Many thanks for the welcome! I've always enjoyed port, but since inheriting a cellar of Ramos Pinto wines earlier this year I have tried to understand this incredible drink a lot better. I didn't want to dive in at the deep end with vintages, so I have focussed on LBVs to learn more about the styles...
