Re: Child Turning 21: What to Open?

John, The Churchill will be the faster maturing of the two. If you plan on giving her the other bottle, or keeping it to give to her later, I'd save the Dow's for later and open the Churchill's now. If it doesn't matter and you want to give her a very special experience the Dow's VP is an amazing b...

Child Turning 21: What to Open?

My daughter will turn 21 this weekend and to mark the occasion I have a choice between two bottles of 1994 VP in my cellar: Dow's and Churchill. Anyone have any suggestions as to which will be better?

Re: 1994 - ready at 20 years? What About '97?

Okay, so how about the 1997s? Will they be ready at 20 years or, more important, when my younger child turns 21 and I can uncork the Taylor I have?

Re: 1994 - ready at 20 years?

They better be! I have bottles of Dow and Churchill from that year that I bought for my daughter's 21st birthday in February 2015. [cheers.gif]

A Pleasant Surprise

I once asked in this forum about people's experiences ordering port in restaurants and, judging from the responses, most have been as diasappointing as mine. This past Friday night, however, I had dinner at a Cuban restuarant in Philadelphia. The dessert menu offered Simth Woodhouse 1985 VP for $20 ...

Query on Burmester 1995 VP

My local wine shop has gotten in a shipment of Burmester 1995 VP. Anyone have any experience with it?

Question about a 1955 VP

I was in a wine store today, and saw a bottle of 1955 VP (I think it was Quinto do Noval, but my memory on this is unreliable) that said, in small letters on the label, "bottled in 2005." This puzzled me, and I re-read it carefully to be sure. Can anyone explain to me why a 1955 VP would b...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Smith Woodhouse 1991 VP. We brought the bottle to a restaurant, and the wine steward decanted it on our arrival, giving it about two hours before we started to drink it. Smooth, fruity, and enjoyable, but not very complex.

Re: What have you opened this week?

A half bottle of 1997 Fonseca VP. I decanted it last night, and tasted it two hours later--not bad. Now, 24 hours later, it has definitely improved.

Re: portugal and the debt crisis

This is a very good question, and may be answered in any of several ways. The first, and simplest, would be to see what effects previous political-economic crises in Portugal have had on the Port industry. Not knowing much about modern Portuguese history, the only thing I can suggest is looking at t...

Re: recommendations requested for LBVs

I would recommend trying the 1999 Smith Woodhouse LBV, but give it 24 hours in the decanter before you drink it.

Port in a restaurant--how dependable?

I was wondering if anyone would have any comments on a question that has been bothering me for a while. When I'm out at a restaurant, I like to order port after dinner. Most of the time this is at a more expensive restaurant, as most others don't offer port or, if they do, have only a limited select...
