Re: How to turn around Port sales into the black again?

Being a newbie in the port world, it's price that's killing me. This past decade has had "good" harvests and highly rated vintages. So buying brand new bottles of VP at $40-$100 that aren't going to have the taste profile I prefer for at least 20-30 years (the time variable - they might g...

Re: Need New Movie + Video Suggestions

Here is a non-recommendation: Drive - Starring Ryan Gosling Gosling is a Hollywood stunt driver by day who moonlights as a wheelman. The premise sounds cool (I didn't fully summarize), and with all the sweet cars and chances for action available you'd think you're in for a good movie. Instead you ge...

Re: Costco making another wine push

I think the problem last time was that there were two up for vote at the same time, so they competed with each other for attention. That made it a bit confusing, and people who are confused about initiatives tend to just vote "no" on them. You might be right. I remember the bad one of the...

Re: Costco making another wine push

I'm torn on this one. I don't have any of the "save the kids" worries, but this law is not as good as the one that was up to vote last time. This one has more restrictions and might not cut prices as much as people would like to. A lot of my thoughts are speculation though, hopefully priva...

Re: Portuguese among most popular business languages

Yeah, when you have heavy industries such as automotive and aerospace moving in to do business, Brazil kind of takes the cake... And a few cases of port.

Re: "port" from other places

Ferrara Tawny Style Port from the Ferrara Winery in Escondido as I've mentioned in a few of my other posts. I have 10 bottles in the case I last bought when I visited San Diego recently. Their tawny is a blend of wines as far back as 60 years old. I can't remember the the ages of the rest of the ble...

Re: "Woot Off" at wine.woot.com

The Hunt Country Vineyards Estate Bottled Finger Lakes - 3 Pack currently up for sale is a good deal at $45. The ice wine alone is about $38, and I think the other 2 late harvest bottles are $15 each. I got these for my parents the last time they were up for sale, I don't know if they've tried them ...

Re: "Woot Off" at wine.woot.com

Haha, during these woot offs they do mix in the odd "gourmet" food here and there like aged balsamic or olive oil. You'll find a lot of California and US wines a lot of the time otherwise.

These are all of the wines that have come out in the past couple of days:

Re: Portuguese among most popular business languages

My friend who recently started doing international business has told me the same thing when I mentioned I was considering learning Chinese. I think I might try picking it up since I grew up with and am fluent in Spanish, so it shouldn't be as big a leap as Mandarin.

"Woot Off" at wine.woot.com

Woot.com is having it's "woot off" today in which specially priced items are sold until they run out and they put up a new item for sale. They also have a wine site that operates in the same manner on these special deal days. I haven't seen any port pop up in the times that I've followed t...

Re: How much influence does the winemaker have when it comes to LBV and Vintage Port?

Having little insight or preference for any particular maker at this point in my port drinking career, I've found I stay away from names that really seem off the beaten path. Like I would be less likely to buy a bottle from some maker who's bottle shows up for $20 at Trader Joes or my local Safeway,...

Re: Port in a restaurant--how dependable?

Considering the 350mL bottle of 2007 Graham's that was opened for me on July 4th weekend of this year is still sitting up on the wall from where I first ordered it, I think that might be a good answer for you there on how restaurants might handle things. I did go back a day later to order more of i...

Re: Non-Portuguese port-styles - Growing market? Or diluted by truly dessert style wines

I guess I just find it silly that legalities over specific lines of latitude and longitude have to determine the flavor/name of a wine. I'm probably not making an original argument here, but I guarantee there are local vineyards that could produce the same quality champagne-style, but simply can't c...

Re: Non-Portuguese port-styles - Growing market? Or diluted by truly dessert style wines

That said, very few taste similar to REAL Port from Portugal. But if that's what I'm looking to drink ... then I do. I don't ever seek out these other "wannabes" for a cheap fix. Instead, I open them because I expect something different and want to see what they have to offer. I re...

Re: Seattle Cigar Expo 8/20/11

It was actually quite worth it, especially with the great weather we had that day. Scoth and liquor tastings were generous, raffles were many, quality free cigars, great free food, and did I mention scotch tastings were plentiful [cheers.gif] I'm not even sure where to start because I was doing so m...

Re: Blog and Portraits updated!

So when is the deep fried butter coming to the fair! I was thinking deep fried lard should be next. The question is does it pair better with Port, Madeira, or a Douro wine  There's a guy at the Texas State Fair who does deep fried beer... why not deep fried Port? You might be on to somet...

Re: Seattle Cigar Expo 8/20/11

I found a coupon online that gives anyone $50 off either the VIP or regular tickets. Simply enter Weekly2011 in the discount code section.

So that's $100 for a bunch of cigars, food, wine, and liquor. If anyone has a free Saturday, this could be a good way to spend it.

Re: For Cigar Lovers

One curious, historical prescedent are the "clear" Havanas, i.e. cigars made in the US using cuban tobacco. These were a big deal prior to the Cuban revolution. I'm wondering if the Cuban govenment would allow sales of bulk tobacco and if they would be used alone or in blends of other cou...
