frozen port

That thawed port still tastes pretty good after 3 months in the freezer. Port sorbet is great too. T

not out on a limb

I bet that port prices rise over time, which is to say that inflation will continue. I also bet that auction prices will decline should there be a slump in world asset markets. Does anyone know how the Port sellers deal with the weakness of the US dollar? Are prices continually adjusted to reflect t...

Hello Björn, Fresh food may taste better than food that has been frozen, but can you imagine living without frozen food? Anyway for the sake of the experiment let us assume that you open a bottle, and you know that it will not keep until it has been finished. So there is nothing to lose. The questio...

freezing port

If you google "freezing wine" you will find lots of articles by people who do it and say that it is a great way to store wine once it has been opened. (Some even say that it gets better, but I would be satisfied if thawed wine was about the same or even only a little bit worse.) I often de...

1985 Burmester Vintage Port

I opened a half bottle several hours ago, and had no idea what to expect, but I think it is very good. A really nice port. Has anyone else had experience with Burmester?

Gould Campbell

The port that I liked the most was a Gould Campbell 1983. I can remember it the best, and I thought it had a lot of style.

Glad to hear that GC 77 is doing well. That was the first port I bought to lay down (only four bottles alas) about 1992, but I still have not tried it.

Kopke

A half bottle of Kopke Quinta St Luiz 1985. Was unfamiliar with the Quinta. Nice cherry flavor, but otherwise rather one-dimensional, and I thought it tasted like a LBV. Was also reminded of a Sandeman 1975 drunk not too long ago which was probably past it, and on reflection not as good. Happy May D...

Anything else in Amsterdam you are tempted by?

Pocas 91

From a half bottle. The cork smelled musty and looked mouldy on the outside, so I was relieved that the wine had a very pleasant smell when opened and decanted. Reddish-brown color. I had a glass after about six hours. I could smell fruit and spirit. A smooth mouth feel. Nice deep fruit, blueberries...

Berry Brothers has a branch at Heathrow which is very convenient if you are flying through London. They are also very good at packing things up to fit on planes. I once carried more than a dozen bottles in two little cartons with a rope grip and it worked out very well.

No, nothing to do with Quinta d. Cotto, or M. Champalimaud either, about whom I have no opinion.

Perhaps it should have been posted somewhere else.

I thought it was a useful synopsis of recent Portuguese history, illustrated by the changing fortunes of another Champalimaud.

Hi Andy,

There is an article http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/may20 ... -m27.shtml about the Champalimaud's economic and political influence. Possibly not objective, but a good synopsis of politics in 20th cent. Portugal.

Roy, Thank you for posting the Quinta do Valle Longo tasting note, and for the very informative answers. What a great site! Of course, I should have thought of including the weather as a most significant factor. (And as an aside, is it possible that warmer summers might lead to a series of great vin...

Drinking young port?

I am curious whether many people drink young VP's, and buy them with the intention of drinking them right away--as opposed to succumbing to temptation and opening one too soon. Recently I was in a Portuguese wine store and the fellow working there was very enthusiastic about a 2003 VP (Quinto do Val...
