Re: BIG & BREAKING NEWS: IVDP - VIOLENCE IN THE DOURO - BENEFICIO

We are here in the Douro now for several days and no residual signs of violence. The Beneficio is a contentious issue understood by few and in need of great modifications over the next decade. Will it happen? Not confident that it will be addressed properly, even though it is probably the number on...

Re: BIG & BREAKING NEWS: IVDP - VIOLENCE IN THE DOURO - BENEFICIO

Victor, Please calm down. Despite what you seem to believe, Americans are not the only people who suffer the effects of terrorism. For my entire life the UK has lived with the threat and impact of innocent people being killed by terrorists, so I am not as ignorant of such things as you accuse me of...

Re: How about some definitions of tasting from the experts?

A flavor wheel could help too. It helps remind me of other flavors in the general flavor region I am tasting... Some flavors are more typical to port like orange blossom or mandarin orange that once you know could be there, you may look for. I notice I tend to pick out the same flavors over and ove...

Re: BIG & BREAKING NEWS: IVDP - VIOLENCE IN THE DOURO - BENEFICIO

Indeed Derek, you're NOT an American and do not have a clue what some Americans have endured. This was a friendly courtesy for Americans to always take precautions when abroad period, You being a NON American may not understand that and I take exception with your tone. You're really are out of line ...

Re: BIG & BREAKING NEWS: IVDP - VIOLENCE IN THE DOURO - BENEFICIO

I was not saying this or that about Portugal, but anywhere one travels. We're at war and have been for a long time since 9/11. That is not fear, but a sad true fact at the present time. I could go on and on about case files about US citizens abroad.... One who travels abroad needs to be diligent at ...

Everybody who cares enough to be a part of this Forum should read this article. This is an astounding turn of events and especially at this time of year. Would love to hear your thoughts! http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2011/09/port-quota-sparks-violence-in-douro/ The last line in the article SAYS...

How about some definitions of tasting from the experts?

Gentlemen (and ladies). Being somewhat new to VP's I would like to know I know what I am tasting in regards to what I hear all the time? I know what I like when I taste a good port, but I cannot explain the flavors like you all. Not sure what the "nose" is, what tannins is more than this o...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Just cracked open a bottle of Noval 20 Year Tawny for the backyard smoke and drink. Mann this is sure good. Thus far me thinking this tasting a bit better than the 40 year opened a few weeks ago. First time on any of the Noval Tawny's. I have a 10 year (which I hear is VERY good) to be opened after...

Re: Last Nights 5 AAA Stars Restaurant Port Experience

Andy, you probably heard of this hotel out my way in the Inland Empire. Great restaurant and wine list (on paper) :( My restaurant knowledge out there is a little rusty as of late, but Duane's at Mission Inn? although it's probably been 5 years since I last ate there so not sure what their current ...

Re: Last Nights 5 AAA Stars Restaurant Port Experience

Victor, Sorry to hear about your experience, especially in such a high end restaurant. But sadly, as Peter mentioned, your experience as all to familiar to us Port lovers. It seems most restaurants fail to give their staff any training in regards to Port and it's even sadder to see most places don'...

Re: Last Nights 5 AAA Stars Restaurant Port Experience

Frankly, you are asking for the impossible. Unless they specialize in port by the glass (with a MAJOR port-drinking clientele), they cannot hope to be able to provide drinkable vintage ports, much less a variety. Although at $40/2 oz, they could pour a few glasses and toss the rest of the bottle. (...

Last Nights 5 AAA Stars Restaurant Port Experience

Read a another thread here on Ports or lack thereof and/or experience in regards to restaurants. Well last night the Minister of Finance and I headed to a 5 Star AAA rating restaurant located in a VERY fine Hotel. We've been there before and knew they had (literally) a 25 page wine menus. I had neve...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Stopped in Bev Mo early today and saw they had both a Noval 10 year and 20 year Tawny. 33% off for both so I picked up both. :-)

Had the 40 year Noval last week, VERY nice and looking forward to comparing these other 2.

Re: Port in a restaurant--how dependable?

Andy brought up the price thing and WOW, some of the prices at some restaurant's is crazy. I was just in a well to do restaurant a few nights ago locally that is known for serving a lot of fine wines. I stopped in just to look at their desert wine list and saw a Graham's 20 year Tawny at $30 BONES a...
