Re: Costco making another wine push

Roy, This is anecdotal at best, but at least its one data point. For most of my life I lived in VA with state run liquor stores. I now live in NV where anyone (almost) can sell liquor. Imagine my shock from growing up in a state where the liquor store closed at 6pm and was never open on sundays, to ...

Building a collection

Thanks very much for the insight. The truth is we ( the wife and I along with friends) are easily drinking an average of a bottle a week. If I am really trying to get a cellar that yields 50 bottle a year....well I don't think I can do very old vp. I am going to be stocking a smaller percentage of v...

How to turn around Port sales into the black again?

Rob, All these years and I never knew I was British :) I thought I was the only person who would actually finish off a bottle, a big meal and still get up and go to work the next morning. And I do serious exercise 4 days a week. Like the other poster I have been what I consider a medium to heavy dri...

Building a collection

I have been giving a lot of thought to building my collection. I want to have a fairly concrete plan in place prior to beginning any major purchasing, so I have been holding off. What I thought I might do is begin by filling the more recent vintage years from say 2007 and 2003 with say 6 bottle of e...

Re: How to turn around Port sales into the black again?

I will take you up on your offer, should be fun. I will hit a major store each night next week and make a simple list of the ports and prices. By far the largest store is total wine. And their inventory is online. There are a few small chains ( mostly now suffering from total wine opening up) and a ...

Re: How to turn around Port sales into the black again?

I have to go along with the supply issue. I seem to have difficulty finding specific ports vs still wines. When I joined this forum Roy suggested a tawny for me to try. I did a wine searcher lookup and could only find two bottles in the us and neither from any vendor I had heard of. Not to mention t...

Re: TRADER JOE'S - not the first name you think of for Port

The 2007 from Trade Joes was the first Vintage Port I ever bought. Their QH 10 year is a solid buy at TJ's also. I saw this while I was there and wanted to get a bottle till i read cellar trackers reviews. It has been rated very poorly on a varitey of topics. I actully put it back after I read that...

Re: "port" from other places

I have one more to add. I just received a bottle of prager 10 year tawny noble companion. best tawny I have ever had (may not be saying much). I was shocked how much I liked it. Seems sold out on their website, but I will be in line for the next allotment. edit; Been able to secure 6 more bottle of ...

Re: "port" from other places

4 vines 2007 Zinfandel Port, Paso Robles I tried this on a whim, and have to say I enjoyed it. This was the first non port, port I had ever had. I have a hard time explaining the flavor difference, much more like a standard zin, is the best I can do, but with a ports richness. I liked it so well I b...

Re: 63 dow opinions and decanting

I just received my bottle and have a question.

The label does not look anything like what cellar tracker shows for this producer and vintage.

it simply says

PORT
DOW VINTAGE 1963
PRODUCE OF PORTUGAL

Shipped and Bottled by
CHARLES KINLOCH & CO LTD
LONDON NW10

should I be concerned?

63 dow opinions and decanting

I have an event late this month where each person is to bring a bottle of wine. The wife and I are going, and I really want the excuse to break open a bottle of 63 port. I have a few in my cellar including a dow, but see most of the others on my favorite website, so I am asking, if you could only ta...
