Re: An old Port category you never hear about

It was done as a medicinal aid to protect against disease; actually promoted by some as an antimalarial. Derek, by the same reasoning ... is Croft Pink - and all that followed ... really Port? Just kidding, of course. Up until rather recently, quinine was the only known treatment for malaria,...

1988 SQVPs

As far as I can tell, no producer declared a VP in '88 and only some of the big houses put out a SQVP after what seems to have been a small, and tough, year. Still, its my birth year, and I'm curious if anyone has knowledge of someplace where I can pick up an '88 to try, and if there are choices, a ...

Re: Old bottles, what do you do with them after they're empty?

This might be better as a separate thread, but I'll toss it out here nonetheless. What is your preferred method for saving the labels (if you're into that kind of thing), and how do you go about it?

Re: 1995 Delaforce Quinta da Corte Vintage Port

Decanted through cheesecloth, little sediment, began consuming within 1 hour on 3-21-12. All fruit from the get-go. This is lacking some structure, so the rich, jammy red and black fruits are a bit flabby, but is still tasty. This is drinking very similarly on day 2 and 3, still lacking some structu...

Re: Graham's VP v. Graham's Finest Reserve VP?

Yeah, I had a suspicion that they might've been two different labels (as Smith-Woodhouse has had) for the same vintage, but the price difference seemed to indicate otherwise. Thanks for the input!

Graham's VP v. Graham's Finest Reserve VP?

I was wasting time on winebid while waiting for a client at work today, as I occasionally do to see what old bottles (aka most Bordeaux) are cheaper or at the same price as their modern, much too young to drink, counterparts. I, virtually, wandered over into the Portugal section and noticed there we...

Re: Tuke Holdsworth

I, apparently, was blind when I was first looking at the bottles, and they appear to be "produced and bottled by Sogrape," but I can't find any record of them on their website. Does that likely mean that its just a catch all brand for the stuff from Offley, et al. that doesn't make the cut?

Re: 2003 Niepoort Vintage Port

Finally posting my notes from 2-19-12: After 8 hours decant: Overpowering in every sense, there is tons of fruit to match the huge structure. Needs a MUCH longer decant. After 30 hours decant: More open, bringing in some violet and mint in with the fruit, great balance but still tough to drink on da...

Re: 1977 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

Finally posting my notes from 2-19-12: Smith-Woodhouse 1977 Decant: 8 hours Cork was starting to look marginal, but came out in one piece. It was decidedly soft and about 90% soaked through. Tons of sediment. This wine was still very burly after 8 hours of decant, but had a lot of fruit and bramble ...

Re: Thoughts on purchasing Port by the case?

-If your goal is possibly resale, I love the 14 bottle idea, as that keeps your case solid even after drinking a couple in the instance you want to sell, otherwise, I don't see much point, unless you want more than a case. This is where off-site storage comes in. You keep two at home so that you ca...

Re: Thoughts on purchasing Port by the case?

I personally don't have enough space for full case purchases at this point, nor really the cash, but if I could buy by the case, I would on some occasions. -If you have a good relationship with a good retailer (not hard for many of us to do, considering how much wine many of us buy and how much most...

Quinta de Romaneira '07 @ $30

Wine Library has Quinta de Romaneira '07 for $29.99 and FS on 3 bottles with the code "PORT07"

Thoughts? Does this fall into Roy's rule of "Sub $40 and quality producer = buy" ?

Offsite Storage: What's the going rate in your area?

Boise only has one business offering offsite storage with strict temp/humidity regulation. I'm likely going to rent a locker, but I'm curious whether their rough rate of $1/case/month is in line/cheap/expensive, etc. What do you guys think? The cost includes 7am-9pm coded access and as consistent ce...

Tuke Holdsworth

Hey all, From some poking around on the internet, I've been able to drudge up a bit of info on Tuke Holdsworth, a brand of Ferriera? that happens to be available in 2 VPs at a local discount grocer. The vintages are '99 and '03 and are dirt cheap ($25 for a 750ml) for VP, but I was curious if anyone...

Re: New Segment for the Newsletter

A couple ideas: You could have a "legendary wine" segment, where you tell the story of a particularly interesting bottle, young or old. It could include the details of the growing season, production, reception and the time and since. Decanter does something similar to this and I look forwa...
