Anything to do with the glorious 1927 vintage, the birth year of Michael Broadbent? :)

Roy, Good thread choice! Personally I prefer 1970 as: 1. The Noval Nacional is brilliant! 2. The next 3 Ports of Fonseca, Taylor and Graham are examples of how well Port can drink at age 35+. 3. My parents were married in this year, so it is always an excuse to buy more bottles! To back up the glori...

Agree with the points made above. I have drunk more 1985 Warre's than any other Port, probably around 18 bottles over the last 6 years. It's drinking at its peak at present and will hold for a few years.

Roy,

Thank you for the update. I bought a lot less 2003's than 2000's. Saw the price differential for older vintages and spent my budget there. We know that the general quality of VP now, especially among the big names, is great, but it is not an easy market out there.

Best,

Next year I might even come to London, as the Fair will be crammed with Port producer's featuring their 2005 cask samples. I did this in 2002 to try the 2000s that were going to be shown there. That was my first trip to London and when I first met Mr. Nicos Neocleous, a very serious Port expert tha...

Roy,

I love magnums of Port! I last opened a 1966 Grahams mag about 2.5 years ago aand it was so youthful! I have not touched my 1970 Fonseca mags  I have some mags of 2000 Taylor and Fonseca that I will drink on my 60, 70 and 80th birthdays. :D

Scott,

Roy Hersh's advice is spot on (as usual) and I have enjoyed both the 1955 Cockburn and Sandeman back in October 2005.

Ray,
Go for 2003, and choose a top name like Fonseca, Taylor, Noval or Niepoort.

Drink it anytime over the next 30+ years. I was fortunate to share a bottle last October. It was absolutely stunning! The best Port of the underrated 1970 vintage.

I have drunk this twice in the last 3 years and, for my taste, it's best days are behind it. Drink up.

Mario, Thanks for posting this. I do think that Port has a wider drinking base than Sherry. However, it is interesting to see the recent changes (last 10 years) that happened with Sherry, in terms of new legal classifications (VO,VORS). Having said that, new Port products (Warre's Ultima) and demand...

Alex, The problem with buying wine or Port from a supermarket is the storage conditions. If a bottle of Port has been exposed to warm conditions, harsh unnatural light, for weeks if not months, than this will affect the condition. This is why I virtually avoid buying any wine or Port from them, no m...

1986 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

TN: 1986 Fonseca Guimaraens – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal) I saw this on sale in Costco a few weeks ago for about £15 per bottle. It was housed in a single wooden box, Perspex front face and a small decanting funnel as well. My first time trying this Port. Decanted using the Roy Hersh method, inc...

On the same day, we reached 300 members here on the FORUM and topped 5000 posts too. Not bad and I am still projecting: at least 450 "official" members and 8,500 posts when we celebrate our first birthday on July 29th of this year. Thanks to all of you! Roy, I have no doubt that you will ...

1966 Sandeman's Vintage Port

1966 Sandemans Vintage Port (Portugal) I bought this along as it was Sophie’s birth year. Coincidently, it was also the year that England last won the Football World Cup. Ah, those were the days! After scraping off the black wax and extracting the cork whole (the odds were against me), I decanted i...

Derek, Thanks for the TN. I remember Jo telling me the story of the 1963 Noval Nacional - you are one lucky guy! I have had the fortune to drink the 1963 Noval Nacional twice, the last time in the honourable presence of Roy Hersh (I was sittiing next to him!) in Miami almost 1 year ago to the day. I...
