Yes, Niepoort, never had this wine before. I was very impressed. Love that dog strangler!

2006 Redoma Reserva

No formal notes, had this last night. Light golden color. Full body, concentrated. Slightly spicy, delicious. One of the best white wines I have had this year. Also had Dirks Austrian red a couple of nights ago. Fantastic! More on that to follow.

First Race of the Year

9 am start, freezing cold in Memphis on Saturday. No team mates, so I scoped out one of the local teams to hang on to. Sat in the bunch for about an hour and a half. Made my way to the front just in time to catch the break that stuck. Only 7 of us. Then with about 200 meters to go one of local guys ...

Re: Niepoort Vertente

I don't know what level Niepoort wine this is. It was 65 dollars at the restaurant, which translates to around 25 to 30 retail. I know the other Niepoort wines are very expensive. But most thing are here in Nashville compared with other parts of the country.

Niepoort Vertente

Had this wine last night at a restaurant in Nashville. 2006 vintage. I had never heard of this wine before. Dark purple color, very youthful, with a touch of tar, red and purple berry aromas. Moderate tannin, balanced acidity. Very delicious flavors similar to the nose. Perfect with my osso bucco. T...

Re: 1999 Niepoort

Roy, where do you put the '99 Crasto vintage? I have not tasted it in a while and most likely did not write a note on it. I would think that it would be a early drinker.

Re: My first bike race of the season

Sounds good Andy, I did just over 2 hours in 32 degrees and 15 to 20 mile per hour wind. Thats all I could stand. I need to come out and do a training camp with you next winter [d_training.gif]

Re: My first bike race of the season

So Andy, to have such an early starting season, does your base begins in November? What kind of weekly mileage do you normally get? Everyone here now is still in the gym doing weights! Just curious.

Re: My first bike race of the season

Too bad Andy, I hate to hear that. Especially the first race of the year. I know how that soreness lasts for weeks. At least most of the time crashes for me happen so fast that you are on the ground with no time to think. I have my first race in one month, hope it goes better. Good luck luck next we...

Re: Bill Koch and fakes in WS--Has it happened with port?

I believe that the wine merchant Whitwams in England was busted some years ago for doing some fraudulent things. I am not exactly sure what. I received a bottle years ago from Tinamou that was supposed to be one year and producer (according to the label) but the cork was branded an entirely differen...

new racing season

Andy, Are you getting ready for the 2010 racing season? I am trying to but the weather here is a little cold. Went down to Florida for a short training camp with a few other guys from the middle tenn. area last week. I would imagine you are ready, and maybe even racing now. My first race is mid marc...

Re: My Douro Trip, June 2009

We are going to a resort in N. Hampshire in a couple of weeks. Lots of drinks and golf. Will take about 8 days off, I am stressing over it. But we have a good time. No much port there, unfortunately.

Re: Besides 1963, what is your favorite vintage of Nacional?

Thanks Roy,

Lets keep it in mind for 2010. I am ready for it whenever. I agree about not wanting to open all the vintages that you have. I feel the same way. Especially my one remaining 1963.

Re: Portonic Portions - Extra Dry

We start with a tall glass, full of ice, then half white port, half tonic. We prefer mint, but love lime, and will do lemon in a pinch. We are having a few tonight as a matter of fact.

Re: Besides 1963, what is your favorite vintage of Nacional?

This is a serious question for me. In all my years of drinking Nacional, my preference is 1970. I love all the vintages of the 1960's. But, the one that stands out for me the most is 1970. Of course, I could say 1931, but the bottle I tasted from was a little maderized, so, not the perfection people...
