H&H 50yo Tinta Negra
Blandy's 50yo Malmsey
Got to taste these during the last Fortification Tour and brought home bottles of both.
Decanting both for a few days and will try them side-by-side this weekend.

Thanks Mike. I ended up ordering a few bottles of RWC Porto Moniz Maderia. Great pricing.

Re: Benchmarkwine.com Bin Sale 11/27 to 12/02
Some very good deals there.
Had my eye on a few bottles - but the "All sales are final" terms for their Bin Sale unnerved me a bit. Saw one Yelp review (for whatever it's worth) where the customer was unhappy with the bottles but there was no recourse as all sales final on Bin.

Epic Kopke White Port Tasting
Last night I attended a Kopke all White Port tasting at a large local wine and spirits store, Julio’s Liquors. The lineup was spectacular, including Kopke 2008, 2007, 2003, 10yo, 20yo, 30yo, 40yo, 1935, and Very Old Dry White. The 2008 and 2007 were very pleasant, and a nice warm up to what was comi...

Thanks for the report, sounds like a nice time.
I'm a big fan of the 1997 Colheita as well. Will keep an eye out for the white Colheita and Moscatel.

Re: Fonseca Moscatel Roxo 20 Bottlings
That’s a good point Eric. I was initially wondering if the wine used in the ‘20’ was any older years ago. But even if it was the freshness might suffer.

Fonseca Moscatel Roxo 20 Bottlings
J.M. Fonseca 20yo Roxo is a stunning pour. No debate. I have a couple bottles of the current bottling, great stuff. The last time I was in the Garrafeira Nacional I noticed that they have some older bottles, bottled in 83, 87, and 89. Not knowing what I was looking at, I passed at the time and found...

Kopke Colheita 1957
A very different animal from all the other Kopke Colheitas I’ve had. More subtle and vegetal than I expected.

Please let me know if any local shop does a D’Oliveiras offering at good pricing. I see Kopke and H&H each fall, but not D’Oliveiras.Moses Botbol wrote:1988 D'Olvieiras Terrantez. Just opened on Saturday. Was hankering for Madeira. I hope our local B&M has a holiday buy on these; getting low.

Re: Dona Amélia cakes
20yo tawny might work. The molasses flavor is not heavy, and the cornmeal is evident.
They are light bodied at first, but the sugar and egg content become evident shortly thereafter in your belly :)
Hard to eat just one. Or six.
But they sit in your belly like a brick later.

Dona Amélia cakes
I made a batch of Dona Amélia cakes this afternoon, a treat from the Azores. Delicious but very filling, much like Pastel de Belèm.

Jose Maria da Fonseca 40yo Alhambra Moscatel de Setubal. Fantastic! Visited Fonseca during this years Fortification tour. The high end of the tasting included 20yo Roxo, 40yo Alhambra, and Trilogia. The 20yo punches above its age due to the Roxo grapes, and the other two are in the same average age ...

Re: The decline of Sherry and the rise of Port and Madeira
for the first time ever, Madeira searches have surpassed Sherry searches - Ooops, that was me ... Not a good sign for the producers. Can be good for the consumer as it leads to increased stocks of quality wine at increasingly competitive pricing. Hopefully it is cyclical as these things often are.

Re: Interesting chat about fortifying spirit.
Many good points above. When distilling whiskies, the higher the distillation proof the lighter and less flavorful the spirit. Bourbon aficionados in particular appreciate a lower distillation proof. But as previously stated, it is important to make the cuts at the right spot. Too narrow and the spi...

Re: Kopke Very Old Dry White Port
I tried the recent bottling in May. The story and my impressions at the time were that this is a limited edition of 350 bottles made from wines aged for at least 50 years. Golden green in colour; an oddly petrol nose — quite similar to the sort of nose you might expect on a mature Riesling. Smooth ...
