Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Pacheca Tawny Port, about $12 at the Grocery Outlet, Bonney Lake Wa. This comes in a unique clear bottle, with a beautiful color that could be a blackberry liqueur. Oddly translucent for seeming such a dark color. The 20yr was lately well reviewed here, so I have high hopes for this. They claim flav...

Tuke Holdsworth, 1983, 375ml bottle

My memory of this from 2014 is that it was just off; the whole balance of acid, alcohol, and tannin was just off. Or am I confusing it with the 1980, of which I have no more. The tasting notes from 2014 aren't that bad, so my memory must be. But I didn't bother to stock up on it. Big mistake. This n...

Portafino Ruby, Gold Mountains Santa Marta de Penaguao

I don't usually report on bargain finds at the Grocery Outlet in Bonney Lake Wa, especially if they are just OK or good, with no great attributes or defects. This was a bit of a surprise, even if it weren't $8. Not remarkable fruity nose. Dark typical red color. I'd say bright cherry flavor, but wit...

Cockburn 20 Year Old Tawny Port

I had expected this to be a much improved version of the 10 year, but not at all. It does have a compelling nose, like musty, freshly fermenting fruit, maybe like plum, really intriguing and compelling. It has a light amber color, like Australian Trafford or Buller's, or even the Carvalhas 10 year, ...

Re: Rutherglen Liquor Muscats

I agree--Seppelt, Buller's, and Yalumba have never been a disappointment. Never seen the area you mention, so I'll have to watch for it. Years ago I had a Lustau Emilon(sp?) Moscatel that was just superb--and I've never seen it again. I did find Lustau Emilon Moscatel in Portland a few weeks ago--I ...

NV Quinta das Carvalhas 10 Year Old Tawny Port

This has a light amber color, bottled in 2017. Very slight licorice nose, fig raisin date flavor, very similar to the Australian ports--Yalumba, Trafford, Bullers. It's been a long time since I had any of those, but this port may be slightly flawed as it seems a bit cloying. Slightly woody. It was b...

2013 Quinta Das Carvalhas LBV -- bottled 2017

I noted some previous notes on this that were not glowing. It has a very mild table wine nose. Very red the first day--almond cherry blackberry flavors that meld into blueberry after 2 days, and the color changes to match. It's a dense but simple flavor, no oak or woodiness here, which would help th...

2007 Leone D'Colline Della Rosa Vin Dolce

I wouldn't ever put in a new note on a previous tasting except this one was exceptional and much different from my TN in 2016. Coming from an Italian in the lower Yakima Valley Wa., the properly don't call this a 'port.' Nearly opaque blackish red color. Notable licorice and maybe dark cherry, to me...

Re: Taylor Fladgate First Estate Reserve

Nice note. If I'm not mistaken, recent bottling of this have gotten decent reviews By folks here. Similar to yours in the enjoyment scale. The important question, would you buy it again? Hi Andy--no I probably would not buy it again--as I already know what it tastes like. I'd recommend it with the ...

Taylor Fladgate First Estate Reserve

About $17 at H-Mart, Federal Wy. Wa. This has a bland table wine nose, and a flavor about like that too, but it is very enjoyable. It reminds me of the Santa Medina port from Healdsburg Ca., a petite syrah port, which was much more complex and intriguing. It has a nearly opaque blackish red color. I...

NV Dona Antonia Reserva Tawny -- aged in oak

I'd seen this label many times over the years, (well, since around 1756) but never bought it before. I have allergies and can't smell too well, but I'd agree with the label--aroma of very ripe fruit, plums, like when you're getting ready to make wine. A nice reddish-brown cherry color, transparent. ...

Re: 2008 Maryhill port 375ml?

They say this was aged 32 mo. in old oak casks. It has a typical table wine nose, but rich and heavy. Color is a nearly opaque reddish black--very nice. Made from Tinto Cao, Tempornillo, Sousao, and Touriga Nacional. They say it's co-fermented--not sure what that means ,but it must have to do with ...

San Antonio Port

I am always hoping for a real gem under $10 with a screw cap; well, this was $6 and is not one. I had never heard of San Antonio winery in LA, so I had to try it. It's a step above Livingston or Fairbanks. Noticeably sweet (which is too much) with a nice alcoholic and slight tannic zing. A bit musty...

Wow! I've never seen that bottling before, [cheers.gif] Thanks for contributing--you may notice in my adjacent post for Cockburn's 10 year, I referred to a post of yours from years before, with quite a different judgement of Cockburn's 10 year than mine. Just odd I can find something unusual in som...

Re: NV Cockburn 10 Year Old Tawny Port

I wouldn't think the year would make a lot of difference? But for instance, a post by I think David Spriggs I think from 2008 likened it to Warre's Otima, which I've always found to be a disappointment, and not similar at all to the Cockburn's 10 yr. The bottling year can make a difference in a non...

I looked at my bottle, and if when on my post for '6 Barrrels' you hit the 'Wine Searcher' button, the bottle you see is the same.

Re: NV Quinta do Portal "6 Barrels" Tawny Reserve Port

Hi Roy--lucky Claudia and Rod, and they deserve that. You are right-my attitude has done a 180 and I don't miss the fair at all. Thought maybe I'd go back in a year or two--but just feel I'm really weary of all those long nights and wouldn't enjoy it at all, in spite of the great crew in 2015.
