Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

12x2011 Taylor Vinha Velha Not tried, but I just love the vintage. I truly suspect these will drink beautifully now and any year they are opened. Wo! Great buy! Where did you buy them? I had 4 in 2015 and one of the 4 was drunk. I plan to drink the next one in 5 or 10 years. Give news if you drink ...

Re: Richard Mayson on Graham's The Stone Terraces

Then there is TCA. How do you score those wines Glenn? ;-) Those are all good points. Ones that I recognize from judging barbecue, where we (at least theoretically) have a standard and a process by which to judge what the teams have produced for us. I'm not a professional wine judge, though. My &qu...

AH! ... Thanks for the answer. I'm not sure bu If a drunk an off bottle it was still very good. Finally everything will stay in my memory.

Quinta do Noval Nacional 1966

First shot with a Nacional (and probably one of the few in my life). I recently acquired it at a "good price" at an auction. Drink from the opening until almost 6 hours in the carafe (Quinta do Noval recommended 2 hours). When opening the Port seems good... phew! There was a little fruit l...

Re: Decant advice for 2 Ports

Finally I wrote this question too late because I already opened the bottles. The bottles were opened a little less than 3 hours before the start of the tasting. Everything was drunk 2 hours later, so between 3 and 5 hours. The Fonseca remained stable from start to finish but the Taylor seemed more f...

Decant advice for 2 Ports

Hi all,
I will open soon two bottles :
Taylor Fladgate Vargellas 2001 (375ml)
Fonseca Guimaraens 1998 (375ml)
They will probably drink up in 2 hours. How much carafe time do you think they would need?

Re: Krohns Sold

Of course they kept the stocks. That's all that they were after in the first place. That's why you see all of the old Krohn stocks released as Taylor Single Harvest Tawny instead of as Krohn Colheitas. They never needed the name or the Quinta, and this sale just proves it. I don't understand... TFP...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Yes, Ramos Pinto produced both a "full" Ramos Pinto VP and a SQVP from Quinta da Ervamoira in 1994. Interesting to know. At the SAQ (Québec) we had regular Ramos Pinto (Tawny with age indication). For some time I was seeing the mention Bom Retiro and Quinta da Ervamoira. I was just wonder...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Inspired by me decanting the exact same wine three days ago - or pure coincidence? I had a similar experience - a class act that needs another decade 8-9 Pure coincidence! Is there a non Ervamoira version as well? I was looking for that one in the cellar instead, but wasn't sure if there was such a...

Re: 1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV Port

Maybe too old? I have never experienced old LBVs (more than 15 years old) but for me also Smith Woodhouse LBVs are among my favorites (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008 on more than 10 times). They were around 12-14 years old and they were all in balance. With almost 30 years I would be curious to taste. Th...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Taylor Fladgate Vargellas 2008. Very nice purity on the fruit with very present and precise tannins. On the other hand, it lacks a little fat and complexity. It is still in good shape and can last a good 10 years easily. I had decanted it for an hour before re-bottling it for another 3 hours to the...

Re: 1994 VP Horizontal Tasting

About 1 month ago I opened a 1994 Dow Vintage and it was very ordinary. Not bad but not great either. A fairly simple Port with little fruit and quite mineral. I tasted it when it was opened and after 8 hours of decanting it was still ordinary. I tried to like it though (I knew what I was drinking) ...

Wow! It's around 90$ Can! Here in Quebec, I can't imagine seeing 1992 fonsecas below 150$ US.
Nice catch!

Re: What have you opened this week?

Good to know for the Dow 1994. I'll drink one this year (i have 5 bottles). Could you tell me more about it? The 94 Dow’s is great. It’s been decanting for 5 hours now and really smoothing out. Am wondering if it’ll be even better tomorrow, which leads me to believe you could cellar this for a long...

Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition

It's been 2 weeks since I received the book and I'm very happy. I have read half of the book and already learned several interesting little details that I would not have learned elsewhere. Moreover, I will probably read this book several times and refer to it. I like it but... I thought that every v...
