Re: Hong Kong: Warre's Tasting on Oct 30, 2017

Al B -- Tsimshatsui is a very built up area and tourist/shopping/hotel/restaurant mecca now :munch: On the HK Warre's tasting, it was conducted by Jorge Nunes as expected. The surprising port on this occasion was the Warre's Vintage Port 1980, which was showing way younger than I remember form earli...

Re: Hong Kong: Warre's Tasting on Oct 30, 2017

They probably are, given that our host for the Bonfim tasting Euan McKay noted during the PHT2 tasting that you had personally selected what we sampled that day and Euan visits Asia from time to time. But we had the Cavadinha vintages: 2015, 2005, 2004 and 1992 as well as the 2001 the Hong Kong tast...

Re: Port in a restaurant--how dependable?

I had vintage port by the glass last month at two London restaurants. Both of them do not use Coravin and we were a bit surprised that not a lot of attention was paid to vintage port not lasting long after opening. Both team members responsible for our wine service at these restaurants seemed to be ...

Macau, China - Macau Soul Port and Madeira lounge

Like Hong Kong, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China. It's about an hour and a bit from Hong Kong by jet ferry. A few years ago, Macau already had 5x the recorded annual gambling revenue of Las Vegas. I visited the very nice Macau Soul port and madeira lounge recently. It is close to th...

Re: Taylor's 1965 & 1966 Single Harvest

I tried the 66 Taylor Single Harvest (Tawny) again last night, and found it more enticing than the first time sampled (late last year) where I preferred the 65 (65 not sampled again since). The 66 is drinking very well. Nose appealing of treacle, hints of smoothened brown sugar, just a beautiful dev...

Vintage Port Academy in Hong Kong yesterday This is a very unusual collaboration between Fladgate Partnership and Symington family. VPA has existed since 2010, with the general objective of expanding port knowledge (particularly among professionals in the wine and restaurant industry but not necessa...

Re: 1977 Dow

Tried the Dow 1977 for the first time earlier this week. https://www.flickr.com/photos/147648174@N08/ Champagne Salon 1996 (still in lemony young state) Vieux Château Certan 1982 (tasting leader thought this was on the verge of being over the hill, but I did not think so and it was fine) Château Gru...

Re: Quinta do Vesuvio - 2001 Vintage

I have had several younger Vesuvios at home and also noticed sediment in some bottles. I think it is Vesuvio specific. But to me this is such an enjoyable single Quinta and bears such wonderful memories from Port Harvest 2 last year that sediment does not bother me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatal...

Re: 1963 vs 1970

1963 Dow's still drinking very well and not in any respect on downside. I was lucky enough to have sampled this vintage from more than one bottle from a wonderful wine society: https://www.flickr.com/photos/147648174@N08/? I liked this kind of vintage port -- elegant, balanced, robust and not "...

Re: If there was one quinta you could visit ... ?

I was not citing that to support the vines are pre-phy. As I explained in an earlier post, they are not. I was citing this for the ungrafted aspect. I will now post some photos of the vines of Nacional on my Flickr and then link it here. https://www.flickr.com/photos/147648174@N08/? Sent from my iPh...

Re: If there was one quinta you could visit ... ?

Andy -- I had a few minutes and here are some snippets from the Noval website consistent with lack of grafting: "What are the origins of this plot of ungrafted vines? The exact origins of Nacional are still unknown because most of the estate’s records were destroyed in 1981, when the Quinta do ...

Re: If there was one quinta you could visit ... ?

It was also in the vineyards at Tua in the late 1970s that the now-emblematic Portuguese grape variety, Touriga Nacional, was rescued from close to extinction... Many of the Touriga Nacional vineyards planted throughout Portugal are the result of work done in these Tua vineyards. Portugal's now-fam...

Re: If there was one quinta you could visit ... ?

Since I've only been on one tour with Roy so far, there are many quintas I've not yet visited and many I don't know about. [foilhat.gif] Having happily already visited Vesuvio (my favorite so far) last year, I was reading about Graham's Quinta do Malvedos and came across this blurb about another Gra...

Re: Taylor's 1965 & 1966 Single Harvest

Here are my thoughts on the tasting line-up from the post immediately above, in Hong Kong January 2017. As you can tell, it was Symington family wines all the way and Jorge Nunes attended. https://www.flickr.com/photos/147648174@N08/? (uploaded recent photos) Jorge indicated that one of the sampled ...

Re: Taylor's 1965 & 1966 Single Harvest

Dear Roy -- Thank-you for your note. I am working hard to improve my knowledge and tasting experience, although I will still be at limited levels in absolute terms. [foilhat.gif] I find myself looking at port by the glass on wine lists when I am pursuing foodie visits to restaurants too. Dear Eric -...
