Re: What is the BEST Port you have consumed in 2020

Due to the pandemic, I definitely hid in the cellar a little more than usual, and I’ve been lucky to be able to enjoy some fantastic Port- and remarkably- no weak or lackluster bottles. So that’s good. 1977 Taylor VP, which was significantly better than when I last tried it about 5 years ago. It alm...

Re: What are You Opening for Thanksgiving?

And tonight’s winner, after long deliberation with the IVDoMC (Instituto Vinho Do Mi Casa), was a VP- 1970 Martinez. Decanted at 11AM, and had a nice bouquet upon opening. Will keep you posted.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Re: What are You Opening for Thanksgiving?

I will be deciding this tonight. In a different post, I related trying one of the 1992 Fonseca VPs a couple weekends ago, and it is moving me to open one of the 1994s. At the moment it’s between the Fonseca and a 1955 Burmester Colheita. I enjoy VPs and Tawnies- but my wife leans towards Tawnies, so...

Re: 1992 Fonseca VP

I purchased a case of these upon release, and will probably snatch up more if they become available at a reasonable price. Looks like they're about $90/bottle via WineSearcher.com, which seems like a pretty good price to me. I usually tape the receipts to the crate so I can remember what I paid. No...

Re: 1992 Fonseca VP

This Port was lovely. While I had left almost 6 hours between decanting and dinner, it clearly needed a little more time. When we sat down after dinner and enjoyed a glass, it had more fully settled in. It’s fruity aroma really blossomed between the time I decanted it and our after dinner glass- wit...

1992 Fonseca VP

Tonight’s “Holy CRAP- what a week this was!” selection.

Decanted at 2pm for dinner at 8pm.

Cork looks good. Nice aroma straight away. Dark ruby with an orange-gree rim on decanting.

Notes to follow.

I’m sorry- for the first presidential debate. BTW- Port may be an exceptional disinfectant.

Re: Port selection for the VP debate....

I opened a bottle of 1994 Dow’s VP for the VP debate- got a bunch of recommendations for the 1994 Fonseca. I’ve got two cases of the Fo sect, and now I’m so itching to open one of them. Maybe this weekend.....

Re: Port selection for the debate: 1994 Dow’s

The '94 Dow's is good but the '94 Fonseca is light years better. I buy it every chance I get at auction when it's below $120 all in. Ouch 120$ (around 160 Can.)is a real big deal! I dont think ill ever see a bottle under 200$ (Montreal). They do show up from time to time if you scout around a bit.

So I’ve been told- I’ve been holding off opening any of it for fear of plowing through it too fast!

Port selection for the debate: 1994 Dow’s

Decanted a bottle of vintage 1994 Dow’s At around 3pm for the debate. Glad I did, as there were three or four moments where I felt like shooting the TV. This was the first 1994 I’ve opened. Very, very nice. Blackberry, black cherries, pomegranate- truly delicious. I suspect will be even better in 5 ...

Re: 1961 Calem

Well, it looks like there is at least one of the 1961 Calem bottles still left at $160+BP. Sometimes winebid will drop the price after a while, but since the other two bottles already sold, I suspect this one will sell soon without a price drop. They had three bottles of 1952 Burmester colheita for...

1938 Niepoort on Winebid

Ok, I feel like I should know the answer to this question, so please bear with me here. There’s a listing on Winebid for a 1938 Niepoort. Here’s the link: https://www.winebid.com/BuyWine/Item/7453017/1938-Niepoort-Garrafeira-Port It’s a 1938 that was bottled in 1941- that part makes sense. But the l...

Re: When do you drink Port?

I generally have a good Tawny opened most weeks. A good vintage bottle 1-2 times/month. I enjoy it with dinner- but mostly have a glass next to me when playing the piano or sitting in my den listening to some good high res audio. Port makes the enjoyable MORE enjoyable- so really, with anything that...

Re: Decanting Taylor's 1985

1985 was a bizarre vintage. There was practically no real consistency from house to house. The Ports went from very good to really average- with your Taylor Fladgate being one of the better ones. I am in th minorit of those who think this one will continue to improve and probably hasn’t peaked yet. ...
