Hi Eric. Good timing, in a few weeks I'm gonna be visiting Las Vegas: 27 November until 1 December. Let me know if you are available to meet one evening

Anyone fancy a madeira tasting?

Hi folks I’m interested to meet up with some Madeira fans for a tasting. I don’t mind what the theme is just want an excuse to open a nice bottle! My preference is London, UK but would also be happy to travel to Europe or USA if that works better for more people. So I’m sending this message out to s...

Question about 1792 Blandy ‘Napoleon’ Madeira sold at auction

This week saw a huge price (£20k + 25% commission) for a bottle of 1792 Blandy Madeira! There is only a single photo of the bottle which you can find here: https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-6366965 It says that this famous Madeira was bottled in 1840. However, this bottle has a gold metal capsule wh...

Re: Exact vintage dates of Borges Family Reserves?

Have you asked the author about that reference? https://www.robertjjoseph.com/contact.html Hi Eric. Good idea... I sent the author a mail 1 week ago, but no reply so far. I also agree with Michael's point that the dates of different shippers don't correlate, and that many shippers didn't exist when...

Exact vintage dates of Borges Family Reserves?

It’s common knowledge that the Borges family reserves have approximate vintage dates: Pather 1720, Terrantez 1760, Boal 1780 Verdelho 1800, Sercial 1810 etc Last week, I stumbled upon a book of fiction by Robert Joseph called Worlds apart which briefly mentions a bottle of a 1761 Borges Terrantez wh...

Re: What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

I’m wondering whether anyone has any strong opinions about the other end of the spectrum i.e. can a wine spend too long in cask? For example, I recently tasted a new bottling of D’Oliveiras 1850 Verdelho. It was very tasty although I couldn’t help thinking that the other bottles I’ve had from earlie...

Re: Henriques and Henriques ancient Reservas

I think my quest to collect all of the Henriques & Henriques Ancient Non-vintage Reservas has gone as far as it can go. The Heavenly lineup is definitely missing at least 2 others: Malvasia Candida and Boal AB. Let me know if you think of any other NV releases that should be there. 13 included i...

D'Oliveiras 1802 Terrantez?

I came across an article by Neal Martin.https://www.vinous.com/articles/hurdling-over-time-19th-century-madeira-feb-2019 It includes an interesting photo with a beautiful range of old T - It’s the second photo in the article. The bottle 2nd to right is strange as it looks like a D’Oliveiras stencil ...

Re: Post-war plantings/bottlings of Terrantez

I’ve tasted H&H1954, D’Oliveiras 1971, Blandy 1976 and 1977, Cossart 1977, D’Oliveiras 1977 (2009 & 2018 bottling), D’Oliveiras 1988 (2019) All very tasty. Though, if I had to pick a favourite it would be the 2018 bottling of D’Oliveiras 1977. The extra 9 years in cask made a big difference ...

Re: Henriques and Henriques ancient Reservas

This is one of my favourite threads on FTLOP, so I thought it deserved bringing back after an 8 year hiatus I’m trying to create my own ‘Heavenly’ collection. Recently I purchased a bottle which is labelled Sercial E.C. as opposed to the Sercial H.H., plus it also carries a different bottling date, ...

Re: What is your BEST Madeira consumed in 2020?

My number one in 2020 was 1832 Oscar Acciaioly Terrantez. Tastebud Heaven. So far I've managed to resist drinking the remaining half bottle, it's so tempting...

At lower price point I really enjoyed Blandy's 1968 Sercial, now that bottle is finished!
