I could join in Las Vegas or the SF bay area provided timing works out for me.

Re: Two bottlings of H&H 1954 Malmsey

My puzzlement is about the selo. If a madeira was bottled in the 2000s, is it possible for it to have an IVM selo and not an IVBAM selo?

Re: Let's talk Auction Prices!

In my experience, sales tax can play an important role in the final price. For example, auctions taking place in Delaware don't add sales tax, which makes the price more appealing. However, the auction houses are not allowed to ship from DE, so arranging shipping via a shipping agent might reduce th...

Two bottlings of H&H 1954 Malmsey

I'm looking at these two bottles of (the same?) H&H malmsey and trying to figure out the bottling year of the bottle with the stencil label. It has an IVM selo, which could mean it should have been bottled any time between 1979 and 2006, right? I wonder if it's possible to tighten this range. Wh...

1 x 1964 Justino's Madeira Boal (Glenn, did I bid against you on those Brentwood auction lots? :D) 1 x 1954 Henriques & Henriques Madeira Malvasia 4 x 1995 D'Oliveiras Madeira Tinta Negra and... drumroll... a bottle of the H&H Grand Old Boal (photo attached). I was a bit suspicious about the...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Interesting thought on the "From" prefix.

On the age, I would imagine if were to be that old, it would have been bottled from some old, old stock... say, a demijohn acquired from some old cellar... a reputable family old madeira stock... Certainly, the bottle is not that old.

I have these bookmarked to be able to decipher the bottle condition abbreviations though not remember most of them, perhaps you will find these useful too: https://www.brentwoodwine.com/wine-condition-notes/ https://wine.ha.com/information/key-to-wine-condition-descriptions-and-bottle-sizes.s http:/...

A recent find of 1794 Spinola malmsey.

I know very little about JB Spinola LDA besides that it is a "Brand of the MWC, joined in 1936, probably went out of trade in 1980." Feel free to share more if you know.

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Blandy's 50 Year Old Malmsey Fantastic! Very unhappy they stopped producing this. Yeah, I think Blandy miscalculated the release price of this marvelous drink, and it got sold much faster than anticipated. I think I was lucky to get the last 6 bottles in the UK (according to the wine searcher :)). ...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Thank you, Andy and Eric! I wondered about the same - who was selling all of this wine. At the auction there were 60 bottle lots, 120 bottles lots... The wine was imported by Wine Marketing Ltd (Slocum R.I., USA), and as you've said Eric, probably decades ago. The OC/boxes looked old and were all un...

Re: What significance has the recency of bottling had for you?

On the topic of comparing different bottlings. During the 2021 Madeirathon, I was quite impressed by the D'Oliveiras 1973 Verdelho . I singled that Verdelho as one of the two of my favorite meio-seco (semi-dry) madeiras (the other one was the 1890). Later, at home I opened a bottle of the same vinta...

Re: Searching Blandys Listrao 1977 an D'Oliveiras 1875 Moscatel

I see a few UK shops are carrying Listrao:

Turville also has the 1875 Moscatel.

Disclaimer: I've never purchased anything from these, so shop at your own risk. :) [cheers.gif]

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Same here, Mike. After returning home from Madeirathon I realized Rare wine co had very competitive prices and placed an pre-order for a bunch of D'Oliveiras

1973 Verdelho
1977 Terrantez
1988 Terrantez

All came with a very recent bottling year.
