Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

2016 Smith Woodhouse VP x2

And the infrequently produced 2016 Quinta dos Eirados VP x2. Part of Santa Eufemia, should be interesting.

Got all four for $80 plus BP!

Re: What have you opened this week?

1975 Quady "VP"
Bought a singleton of this at auction to try, closest real Port I've had to this was the basic Taylor tawny. A little too hot and acidic, unremarkable. Best on second day, primarily red fruits.

Garrafeira Nacional doing 20% off all fortified

Good option if you're looking for all those rare bottles not available this side of the pond.

Running until the 23rd, one week from today.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Not a real Port, but gave the 2019 Barnard Griffin Syrah Port 500ml a shot. Very different from Port from the outset. 85% Opaque, reserve ruby level of concentration, far less sweet than Port. Medium to strong acidity, subdued spirit. Dry tannins present but not overly brutal. Dark shiraz character,...

Whoa, a "last again" 1927 Niepoort? https://www.winespectator.com/articles/ ... arth-41686

Also, how does that work for a VP to be bottled after 14 years? Is that a Garrafeira or did they just used to bottle them that late?

Re: What have you opened this week?

Good to know, I was about to open one when my brother visits at the the end of the month and I am Durand-less and tong-less atm.

I shall open a 95 Vesuvio then, since you said it's ready.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Cockburn Fine Ruby Was not good last night - a diesel of a port. A bit hot as well. However, it opened up today with raspberry and more dusty tannins than I would expect from a regular ruby. After having the 2015 LBV, Ruby and Reserve Ruby recently, I think I'm starting to grasp the style the Syming...

Re: Durand-style Openers

Patents are state-enforced monopoly rights and therefore I do not care for them as they exist today. In pure economic terms, they create a huge loss in consumer surplus. The main purpose of patents was ostensibly to provide relief to those who have to invest huge resources in R&D into developing...

Durand-style Openers

Found this a while back but haven't pulled the trigger, am curious if anyone has bought one or think such opener types are worth it. It's a little bit different than the Durand in that the handles are at an angle, which I think is probably better ergonomically. The price goes down from $85 and then ...

Re: Van Zellers & Co Port Aged Underwater

They are selling 35 out of 102 ocean-aged bottles of their 2020 VP for 1083 USDC each as NFTs. https://winechain.co/drop-details/3145097 Kind of a shame it's that much and only such a small amount, because it means it will simply be a novelty for the rich. You can get like 4 GSTs for that much which...

I love reading these harvest notes because it instantly makes me want to buy the 1998 Warre's Cavadinha. I know it's not exactly rational.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Finished the '85 Fonseca last night. I really took about a week in the decanter to come around. Crisis averted. Need to plan a better pop and pour candidate. The first night was a let down and luckily did not drink more than a glass. I don't pretend to be nearly as experienced with VP as most of yo...

Re: Van Zellers & Co Port Aged Underwater

I think the Van Zellers and their Ports get something of a bad rap, or at least, are sort of ignored. I don't know about the merit of this experiment specifically, but everything that they have been doing recently does suggest that they are working very hard over there on innovating and making bette...

Re: Fun Port Quiz for the Opinionated

Cool answers so far. I picked up two of the '95 Vesuvio, I wonder how ready they are, relative to the 94s. The 1995 is much more "ready" than the 1994, but that's not to say that it is maturing early or anything. It's just that the 1994 is a beast. I'd say that the 1995 will probably peak...

Re: Fun Port Quiz for the Opinionated

This is Phil's response let's see if this posts. Interesting questions; my take on some of them: A) What are three excellent, presumably young, Colheitas under $50? At that price point I think 20/30yr tawnies are generally better quality than the colheitas; for the colheita to be sufficient quality ...

Fun Port Quiz for the Opinionated

Came up with some fun, yet practical questions about value/off-beat Ports not talked about much. Feel free to answer any/all, in accordance with your experience. A) What are three excellent, presumably young, Colheitas under $50? B) What are your favorite three White Ports under $50? Alternatively, ...

Offley Regular White Port
Felt run-of-the-mill and a bit bitter yesterday but after leaving it in the fridge overnight, today it's a good honey nectar.

Re: Advise for selling a collection of Vintage Port

We might buy it, post the list of Ports and maybe we'll make a cash offer. There's also a few auction houses that are typically overbid so you can sell to them, others can comment on this. I think Leland Little, Christie's and perhaps Hart Davis Hart are some of them? WineBid should be fine too if y...

Awesome, thanks for the note.

I got this for my brother for his birth year, he was beaming with bottle in hand.
