Re: Corked bottle refund

They could have helped you out but if they had a policy of making whole everyone who bought a corked bottle, they couldn't stay in business. I am kind of hoping to get a corked bottle at some point in order to try Tom's method. Which is to recork it (preferably with some inert gas to displace the O2...

Re: Let's talk Auction Prices!

Brentwood has a few interesting lots hammering on Thursday. I don't think they know what they are doing with regards to price, which tend to be all over the place. They've been trying to flog a 1978 Croft Roeda for $250 for months now (with seepage, no less). Meanwhile, they sell 1994 & 1995 Ves...

Re: Shipping question - winter climate

As you know historically Port was shipped for weeks in hot and humid wooden ships. Do what you think is right, but unless these are particularly sensitive bottles I personally wouldn't stress about 3 days in a chilly delivery truck. If it was the peak of summer then that's a different story, as ther...

Re: What is the best Port you've tasted in 2022?

Someone was looking for a 1952 Vintage Port on reddit and I told to them to get a Colheita because of the slim pickings for VP. The best VP I found in Sten's notes that could be purchased was actually the Mackenzie, odd thing about the the 50s and Mackenzie. They ended up getting the '52 Burmester C...

Re: Bottle opening second opinions on my little collection

Since nobody answered, I'll take a stab at these. 1. Don't know about Tedo, but most 2000 ports can use a few more years of cellar time at least, I had three recently in a horizontal and they all had runway. One (the Warre's) needed lots more time. 2. LBVs vary quite a bit. The main generalization t...

Event: 2015 Offley, Cockburn, Dow, and Barros LBVs

Went through one more round of 2015 LBVs. Likely doing some 2016s next. Tasted Blind, 7 hour decant. 2015 Offley LBV Red cherry and an interesting watermelon aroma, also quite floral, very enticing. Very easy to drink and clean on entry, red fruits and floral. Smooth and balanced. WOTN on the first ...

Re: Vintages... Best?

There's '03 Infantado VP for $15 on WineBid this very moment. There's always some below $30 if you dig enough. And around $30-35 its not hard to find, especially if you buy a full case. But would any knowledgeable Port lover want to buy '03 Infantado is the real question? There's a reason it's $15,...

I was last second sniped out of a lot of '91 Croft, which was unexpected, but keeping some dry powder is just as well.

Re: Vintages... Best?

That analysis may make sense for high-end Burgundy and other "investment" wines. But it doesn't make sense for Vintage Port. First, because Vintage Port prices are already so low that many are below the release cost and the even the cost to produce. With prices as low as $20-35 for VPs, ma...

2003 Rozes LBV

Since it is likely about to sell out on WineBid, I decided to PnP this one (am bidding on a replacement bottle). True bright red when up against the light, and like the 2000 Rozes VP is also cloudy. Was an easy pour, the sediment wanted to stay in the bottle. Roughly 60% opacity (Am not good at grad...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I was eyeing up that very lot as a matter of fact, but I never placed a bid. Nice win, you'll enjoy all of them. Thanks Mike. Hopefully it'll be good. If you hadn't extolled the virtues of the '95 SW Madalena, I wouldn't have bid. There's a bit of a bidding war on WineBid atm for some Madalenas as ...

Re: Q's about LBV decanting, recent Crusteds, & ordering from EU

Quick random question: If I see a bottle of 20 YO Tawny at auction and there is a significant amount of sediment showing in the pictured neck, is that something best avoided? I thought tawnies weren't really supposed to leave a sediment. edit: While I'm asking questions, what are some of the best ye...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Sandeman Reserve Ruby Was thinking of giving one away but decided to try one first and good thing I did. First port I've had with an agglomerate cork T-stopper, not the best look for a gift. The Croft used a good, smooth cork on the T-stopper. The Port itself was decent, with mouth-puckering tannins...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Croft Reserve Ruby

Having this Port with cheese before bed, it's lovely. Enticing aroma, it does have a strong kick but is otherwise scrumptious with bright, fresh fruit.

edit: Kick wore off next day, its quite pleasant.
