Re: What have you opened this week?

Am visiting family in Hong Kong and opened a 2017 Taylor LBV I was able to find here. It's super duper solid. Smooth and impressive. And held up very well for a full week, only half of which was in the fridge which I assume bodes well for it's longevity. Definitely will be keep an eye out for more ...

The problem with Krohn is in saying, "I thoroughly enjoyed that old crone."

Re: Do You Make Bacalau at Home?

My family does all the time. Let it soak overnight in cold water, then change the water in the morning and let soak a few more hours. Boil the fish. Also boil potatoes in accordance with how many dinner guests, peel them, slice them into .5cm disks. Concurrently, chop 2-3 large onions, fry them in o...

Re: What Portuguese wines have you opened this week

Not a PT wine but I bought an Italian 2008 La Stoppa Vigna del Volta Malvasia Passito at auction, to fill a case and try.

And it is really good. It has that right elevated sweetness level cut with acidity - the low alcohol and low tannins makes it a real smooth apple nectar.

Re: Port in a Coffee Mug

I've wandered around cruise ships drinking Tawny Port out of an opaque coffee mug. You're not supposed to drink your own alcohol outside of your room, but no one suspects a cup of coffee no matter the time of day. Q: What are you drinking? A: "strong brew, no milk, extra sweet."

2002 Warre's LBV

Somewhat spirity flavor but very mellow/not-hot. In a good spot but thinner than I anticipated. Compared to the thick yet well-rounded 2008, this one is positively mature.

Re: LBV Casual Tasting

That 2011 Pocas is solid. I have a working theory that the best value in recent LBVs is not likely to be found among the big boys like TFP. They make good products for sure, but may also be more stingy about keeping the best juice for Vintage. Whereas quality is up across the industry and the smalle...

Re: Short Interview with Adrian Bridge

They real joke is that they still don't probably care about table wines, and are simply chasing the huge influx of money that went into the hard seltzer category in the late 2010s led by White Claw in the U.S..

Re: first auction bids

Everyone covered the auctions and ports very well. I would note that that auction supply is like the tide, sometimes there are 400 bottles of Port from Portugal on WineBid and sometimes there are just 123 mostly higher-end bottles, like there are this week. So you have to keep checking, especially i...

Re: Revisiting old posts you made on FTLOP

And here I am just trying to buy a 10 year old Madeira for less than $40, twice as much as a 10 year old tawny.

Perhaps by the end of the decade, production will catch up or tawny demand will rise further to narrow that gap?

Darn it looks like I missed this, I've been on a lookout for those Quevedo LBVs.

Appreciate the heads up, I'll keep an eye on this source.

Re: Merry Christmas to All

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to this great group - I’ve learned a lot since I’ve become a member. Same. This place is a gold mine of knowledge. I'd rather read old threads here than Wine Spectator or whatever. Happy new year to everyone. The 1994s will turn 30! 2024 should be a solid year.

I opened this for my father's 78th birthday in August. It was a hit, he even liked it more than the '95 Vesuvio which I opened the prior month.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Cracked open my first '94 Vesuvio for Christmas Eve. I figured I should try one sooner rather than later, so I can decide to maybe pick up more bottles. I was expecting much more of a bruiser, but this bottle is smooth and delicious. I left it standing up in the basement in a cabinet for a few month...

2002 Krohn Colheita b. 2018

Woody aftertaste. Very smooth yet still quite big bodied and purple. Not bad at all, especially considering it was $24 retail.

To fill & ship my final case of the year: 1991 Ferreira 1997 Noval Silval 2000 Broadbent At Shopper's Vineyard in Clifton: Warre’s Heritage Ruby Port 2017 Quinta do Vallado LBV 2018 Taylor LBV Blandy's Bual 5 year old for $14. I think they were mispricing this but it's what was both on the rack ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

It was alright. It definitely seemed like it underwent accelerated aging, but I don't have enough experience with small bottle sizes to say more than that. Could just be bottle variation. If you have a 375ml, I would suggest opening one to try - I don't think it will be "early" by any mean...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Tried an older bottling of Graham's Six Grapes I picked up at auction. While it's not bad per se, I decided I don't really like it - it's a bit too "dirty." It also needs a ton of air - a couple days of decanting even. The newer bottling with the fatter bottle is a bit better but has this ...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

If I can keep snagging good VP at auction for $25, even if only occasionally, I might even abandon my goal of trying virtually every LBV recently produced to figure out which one to buy in bulk. This party is sure to not last forever.
