A day in the Douro + motorcycling around Porto?

[yahoo.gif] Guys! Guys! I finally get to go to Porto! I've been a site member for over ten years now and I'm finally going! [yahoo.gif] My wife, a scientist, gets invited to conferences all over, and this July she'll be in Porto. (I get to go along as the companion animal.) Her schedule will keep he...

Tawny newcomer ISO new short-term relationship!

Hello all, Last night my fiancee took us out to a Pocas vertical tasting. We sampled everything from your basic Ruby up to a '64 Colheita Tawny. We preferred the 1967 to the 64. Both featured an almost Scotch-like, teasingly smoky resonance on the back of the palate, and a great, honey-textured pour...

Buy before the holidays, or after?

I feel like this is a newbie question, but got to wondering. Here in the US, are prices generally better before, or after, Christmas & New Years? Or does it make no noticeable difference?

Cheers!

Re: Asimov talks about Port in the NY Times

I found the article disagreeably snarky. Drinks like rye are making inroads into the 'younger set' and I don't see why someone couldn't have an open mind about port as well (along with their open bottle). Hmf. I think it would be interesting to find some of the old recipes for port drinks referred t...

Re: Benchmark Wine--pre-arrival ports

You're right Andy--that is a little off-putting.

Whenever I've checked, lately anyway, Vinfolio.com has beat these guys.

Benchmark Wine--pre-arrival ports

Benchmark sometimes can be beat on price, but I've never seen them offer so much port. Here's the e-mail I got. Hope these work for someone--I'm still thinking about it. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------- You can thank this lovely European collector for storing thes...

That I don't know--I've never been; I've only lived here four months or so.

Shall I inquire after Steve and mention the Roy Hersh Fortification Discount...? :hello:

Smith Woodhouse 1984 LBV: $23.99 = go...?

A store in DC, Pearson's, is advertising seven cases at $23.99 a bottle. (Link--do a Find for LBV.) Tasting notes here at FTLOP seem a bit mixed. Go or No Go, do you think?

Thanks all,
Mike

Re: The "new" economy, wine, Port & pricing

I'll be keenly watching this--for the first time in at least a year. Having gone through a prolonged period of financial insecurity (but I held on to the vintage port--stored it with my folks so I'd elude temptation!), I've landed a terrific job that'll endure just about any downturn. (If there is s...

1966 Fonseca from vinfolio.com for $229. (They have three more after this one.)

I'll let you know how it goes--!

Wow--thanks again all. Derek, I didn't mean to show the choices paired that way; I agree it would be one from the top group and one from the bottom one. Today's Winesearcher is pessimistic about doing that as it's got some of the Warre's in the UK for $170+shipping, and they go up from there. But no...

Thank you gentlemen both--! I'll try to get a '66 here. I've never seen any advertised so it might be a bit of a treasure hunt though. So: 1966 Fonseca 1966 Taylor, or else 1966 Warre's 1966 Dows ...and if I play the lottery enough, maybe the Nacional. Yes? Dave, the government deducts taxes from ou...

I smell a refund...

At the end of this month-ish, provided the IRS doesn't trace the monies laundered from my math manufacturing operations, I get a nice refund.* I would like to set aside about $300 (US) to buy a nice bottle for drinking now or in the next year or so. I'm drawn to a '63, but that may be because I lack...

I'm one of the outliers who voted the Fonseca. This seems like not such a serious and weighty occasion and I think that port will suit the mood better. Less gravitas.

However, my heart is with Alex; since you'll be washing your glasses in tidal pools anyway, why fret too much? :o
