Re: FTLOP's: NFL Post Season Bragging Rights + Prize
Another big shout out to Roy for setting this up. I was sure I had the prize - thought the Pats would win, maybe even by a lot. Oh well......

Re: FTLOP's: NFL Post Season Bragging Rights + Prize
As usual Roy, I agree with you 100%! Like it's not bad enough that we'll be without football for 7 months (twice as long a gap as the other pro sports league), they make us go without a week early?!

Re: FTLOP's: NFL Post Season Bragging Rights + Prize
If i was home with my cellar full of port, it would have been a no brainer, but I've got only two nice bottles here and may be here until 2013 now. Imagine the horrror of being without a nice bottle of port at hand!

Re: FTLOP's: NFL Post Season Bragging Rights + Prize
Go Giants/Patriots/Patriots!!
I toyed with the idea of opening one of the only two decent bottles of port I have here (currently living in Guatemala....) but decided to wait since even a portlover like me cannot drink a whole bottle over a few days!

Re: FTLOP's: NFL Post Season Bragging Rights + Prize
Hey Roy! Long time, no post! But your contest really got my attention - a way to begin to deal with the end of NFL football, which is a struggle every year! Here are my picks: a. Who will be the winner of the AFC Championship game between the Baltimore Ravens visiting the New England Patriots? Patri...

Re: JAMES SUCKLING
Sorry James, one more: how would you rank the following ports by order of sweetness? Graham Croft Gould Campbell, Quarles Harris, Smith Woodhouse, aka "The Twins" Fonseca Warre Vesuvio Taylor Dow This is more or less how I would rank them but I have no more than a few bottles worth of expe...

Re: JAMES SUCKLING
James, a few odds and ends questions: -if you had to pick a last meal port, just from post-war options, what would you pick? I'm betting 45 Croft is your pick or would at least be on your short list -do you agree with some that half bottles and single quintas mature more quickly than bigger bottles ...

Re: 1983 Dow
I'm glad to hear you say that, Roy, as I may have more Dow that anything else. I opened a 77 a couple of weeks ago and while it was nice, it made me think that my tastes really swing more towards the sweeter, Graham's end of the spectrum than the drier Dow end. Still, as you say, one can never have ...

Re: 1983 Gould Campbell
I don't recall, to be honest, but I usually decant in the morning to drink in the evening. Tonight we're having a 94 Graham from a half, and tomorrow a 77 Dow and 91 Vargellas (portloving friend from the WS Forums in town for the weekend coming for supper tonight, and an offline in his honour tomorr...

Re: 1983 Quarles Harris
Bob, I was refering to what the Symington's consider it. It really is their "lowest" house...sorry but I'm not really sure how to say it any better. That doesn't mean it isn't a good product, just where it lies in the heiarchy of the Symington's labels. Thanks for the clarification. :) Th...

Re: 1983 Quarles Harris
Quarles Harris is the bottom of the barrel (to use the term) of the Symington's brands. I respectfully disagree Andy, insofar as I think it compares favourably with the other Symington "twins", as I call them, Gould Campbell and Smith Woodhouse. I find that I end up scoring them all consi...

Re: Is it possible???
I just posted TNs on three 1983 Symington ports and cannot figure out how I can be the first to post on these ports.
Odds are that my technologically- challenged brain just can't search properly....

OK, either I'm the only one drinking 1983 ports or I cannot figure out how to search on this site! These TNs are from 36 hours after opening, of which the first 12 were spent in an open decanter after which it was stoppered. Medium full bodied, medium sweet. Lots of alcohol on the nose even a...

1983 Gould Campbell
Again, can this be the first TN on this wine? Medium full bodied, smooth and medium sweet. Very very dark in the glass, colour right to the edge of the rim suggests it could age much more, though it seemed mature. I tasted black cherry, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, cola, Sambuca, and sweet BBQ sau...

1983 Dow
Hard to believe this is the first TN here for this wine, but I couldn't find another one. Tasted over Christmas. Decanted only one hour. My notes below should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt as I had a stuffy nose, the beginning of a cold, when tasted. Drier than most vintage ports, typic...

Re: TN: Sandeman Vau Vintage 97 Mag
This is the only young (under 15 years old) vintage port I've ever had that I thought was worth drinking so young. My tastes are very much more towards fully mature ports, but this one was an exception.

Interesting. I'm originally from Windsor, and we had a cottage betwen Clare and Harrison for many years when I was a kid. And we're off to Frankenmuth for some quick outlet mall shopping, and reliving past glories, the first week of January. Where are you? Do you ever offline with the Detroit gang o...

Thanks Bill. :) I'm guessing that you are in Ontario? Funny you mention the 92 Warre Cavadinha (the reason I'm guessing you live in this province), as I opened a bottle last night and had some tonight. I made some TNs but they are downstairs and I'm en route to beddy-bye, so they will have to wait. ...

I got a lot of 88 Malvedos because my son was born that year and that seemed to be the best of the vintage. Also the only one available here up to a couple of years ago. Since it was less thatn $50 a bottle I got lots, so we've had it often over the past few years. And yes, I still have the three bo...
