Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

It has been a long time since my last post, and honestly, I haven't purchased many bottles of VP since posting from a few years ago - my habit was starting to catch up with me and funds were getting a bit limited for these types of discretionary spends. This week though I ran into Roy at the Seattle...

2011 Quinta do Vale Meao Vintage Port

Hey folks, It's been a while so forgive me as I shake off the rust... Was motivated to grab something from a local store in Seattle after running into Roy in all places, at the Seattle airport as he returned from an annual tasting in Edmonton. Unfortunately I was away and couldn't make that tasting...

Re: Got a Leaker--Now What?

If the plan is to drink the bottle in the relatively near term, I stand it up, put clingfilm over the top as Alex says, and hold it in place with an elastic band. If the seepage is not so bad as to demand re-corking you can re-wax or overwax. Get some bottle wax (which is just a hard paraffin wax) ...

Re: What is you current favorite LBV Port?

Warre (Bottle Matured) 1995 LBV. Excellent wine. I love this LBV. Sadly, I have one lonely bottle of it remaining. And I'm waiting to open it with the Smith Woodhouse 95 LBV that sits on the rack beside it. They are a "both or neither" deal at this point and I have not had the opportunity...

Re: Would you pair Port with steak?

I am soooo relieved that I am not the only one who has tried this pairing... :yumyum: I thought I might be weird. I recently had a free-range, grass-fed cow butchered and split between a few good friends. While the meat was a bit on the green-looking side, the taste was wonderful, especially when se...

What is this "spitting" you are referring to??? I'm genuinely confused. [shrug.gif]

Re: Tableside Technology: New ways to present wine lists

For a restaurant to keep an accurate inventory would require that there be one single person who is responsible for every single bottle that moves in or out of the cellar. I don't think it can happen. Instead of a bar code, put an RFID on each bottle when it comes in. Then you don't even have to ha...

"Aged in wood" - makes me pretty positive it is a Colheita from '52. Neat-looking bottle, I have not seen one like this before.

Enjoy Anton and do let us know what it is like when you do. [cheers.gif]

Re: New Port Glass from Churchill Graham

The white wine glass does well in restaraunts that don't have real port glasses. there's an added benefit sometimes in that the person pouring really is shocked at how small a pour of port "looks" when in a white wine glass. Sometimes, they feel sorry and tip a little more in until it look...

Noval 2003 LBV (something not entirely right with this bottle... asleep perhaps? Not as vibrant and powerful as normal. Almost bitter.)

Re: What's the best port you had in last year under $15?

Real port under $15 is unheard of over here. In fact I've only ever had one under $30 and only just at that - Quinta do Pego LBV which wasn't bad. The only other one I've seen under $30 is a Dow Ruby. Same as Paul, I don't know that I have seen a bottle of Port for under $15 here. It is possible th...

Re: How long do feel Port lasts once opened?

You mean Port lasts longer than a day? who knew? [shrug.gif] In seriousness, as many have indictaed already, I really do think it depends upon producer and in the case of Vintage Port, the age. It also really depends on what you prefer, as the Port will evolve over those days that it is open...

much more bowl-shaped than elongated. It's difficult to tell exactly how wide the mouth is (will the bouquet be more evident with this shape or less?) I'm not good with the physics side of things so not sure how this specific "geometry" (if it can be called that) will affect what you get o...

Re: Tableside Technology: New ways to present wine lists

Wow, they must have had SOME pitch to get Apple to agree to let them reprogram the iPad specific for that application. Smart idea. Wonder how much that service costs and the effect on the markup of the wines that a restaurant carries in order to pay for the appliance and unit rentals. Sounds very co...

Watched a parade yesterday... Cup celebration. How many people there?? >100,000 and no riots... ;). Vancouver, take note. I'll finish my thought from the other day: I said to a couple of co-workers on Tuesday before the game that Vancouver was going to have troubles. The extent of the tro...

Re: What have you opened this week?

A Fonseca 2005 LBV that was unfiltered and fantastic. My only regret with that bottle is that it was Wednesday night afte the Bruins won the Stanley Cup and I drained the bottle while watching Vancouver embarrass itself with riots... No notes were taken and I was drinking out of horror rather than e...

Re: 2000 Taylor's vintage port (four bottles and a question)

For VP, the typical years to have it close down is around 5-8 years after bottling. I'm actually more than a little surprised to hear that you had such good showings in 2009 and 10. I also, would wait about ten more years before opening that next bottle. Perhaps if there is the need to sample before...

Re: Worst Tawny Picks?

I don't get the chance to try an awful large variety of Tawnys, but one that I have always been disappointed by is Grahams 10 and 20 yr olds. I've never been a fan of their tawny either. What about the other Symington Tawnys? Dow 20 I really enjoy. Warre Otima 10 is not that great Calem and Cruz ar...
