Can't say 100% from personal experience, but from what I have read of tasting notes, etc... it would seem that for a mature bottle, many of the best around came from those bottled not in Portugal but in England.

Not sure why. Perhaps better storage in the internening years??

Provenance.

Sure Port is fairly tough but where have those bottles been for forty years? Can you account for all the years? It is also nice to taste the new wines as they mature, etc... blah, blah, blah ...

But provenance is the main reason.

I have never even HEARD of a madeira tasting in my parts.

I do know someone from local off-lines though who I have invited over, still planning, to taste through some vintage madeiras I own. Anyone else is welcome to join, but otherwise I'll wait to hear about a madeira tasting someday.

Adding Decanting time to TNs

Since I do not remember ever opening a VP and thinking it needs zero time in the decanter, how about everyone trying to state decanting time with thier TNs as appropriate? Sure, on day two, with some LBVs or Tawnys, there may be little need for decanting, but with many VPs it can be helpful to get a...

Stupid polls! Will need to practice the polling. Nonetheless, I do mean the current vintage of VP releases. I think most port lovers will ALWAYS be buying SOME port (usually older vintages, Tawny, LBV, etc...) but I was more interested in when one will stop buying the latest vintage in bulk. ...

At which age will you stop purchasing VP?

Interestingly enough I see posts from people already considering when they will stop or greatly slow their purchasing of current vintage VP. Many times this is by age 40. Now I will always buy some VP as I enjoy VP both young and mature. It is also fun to taste VP upon release and at ages 5, 10, 15,...

Every description I have ever heard of Colheita is that it is vintage tawny and as such is 100% from one year. Having said that, I realize that vintage wine in other areas canhave a small percentage from another vintage (I think) but have not heard that about Colheta. Seems that kind of blending she...

Never had the 94 but the 97 was outstanding in my opinion. Good QPR as well.

One more item, if anyone happens to be in AZ, a local, decently high end store, AJ's, ahs several bottles left (even after my visit) of Broadbent 2000 VP for $24.99. Not at all bad for the money!

I have never sold any of my wine. However, I think I woul be interested in the possibility of trades for some wines that are hard to find if I have something.
Also, tips on good sales, etc.. are ALWAYS welcome before they sell out.

Good question. Other than some younger Broadbent and one of the RWC Historical series I needed quickly, all my vintage madeiras have been purchased though them. So far I have not been able to beat their selection/price for the older bottles. The Historical series though I bought locally and had a Br...

I do like the half bottles. I use them early on for a taste of the port and how it is progressing. Prefer to buy more in 750 format though for the long haul. But yes, the half bottles are nice now and then. As far as mags, I do like those as well. The issue for opening is more time than occasion. Be...

So far there are many I would like for which I have not located a vendor as yet. Even so, I have already purchased some pre-arrival such as Fonseca, Vesuvio, Taylor, and Grahams. Would like to add Niepoort and some others but need to see them available first. Have also been buying some older vintage...

Indeed.

A little late with this note, I know, and the port was young, I know.

Opened up much better the second fday. More of everything and with deeper flavors, more nuance, and yummy. Still very little to no tannin to speak of, but that was fine. A fine young drinking port. :)

While I can't say I have tried it, I do not really lik the idea of it. It would certainly remove pretty fine sediment but what about imparting any taste? In an emergency perhaps, but otherwise would prefer a slow decant with perhaps a fine metal mesh strainer. Hopefully someone has tried this and re...

A little bit later. Additions:

Nose: Cherries Jubilee and very light amount of dark chocolate.

Taste: Same as before with some cherry pipe tobacco and some hidden tannins at the end.
Yummy.

2001 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port

After reading through some of the tasting notes available for the 2003 ports, I am feeling left out since I have access to exactly zero. As such, I decided to open the youngest VP I do have, a lone Vesuvio 2001. Upon opening it was not showing much at all. Not as aromatic as I expected, little tanni...

Looking for advice on seepage/longevity

All, Have been purchasing some more port of late (always an ongoing endeavour) and notice hat with some very reputable stores, they list "signs of seepage". This is no the type of merchant to sell wine known to be bad, so I expect that this means some laeking from poor corks or the lie and...
