Quarles Harris '77 Decanting Time?

Just received some QH '77 and after letting it rest for a bit may open a bottle.

This is a house from which I have never tasted so am wondering about decanting time. Any experience out there?

"Unfortunately I was born in '71 so no good aniversary wine of any sort for me to celebrate with except some excellent but very flat champagne. If I was born in '70 I'd celebrate with a Fonseca '70 (v. good - all port lovers are unanimous in that view I think - but v. pricey) or maybe a Warre '...

I STILL haven't seen the Portal for sale anywhere in the US. And the Niepoort at only a few.

As for the Niepoort label, I too was surprised. The name looks like something from a sci-fi movie of the early 80's.

1966 Kopke VP

Has anyone else seen the Garagiste sale for 1966 Kopke Vintage Port (375ml)?

I always think of Kopke for Colheitas, not VP. Anyone actualy had this? I would not have really high hopes for it except Garagiste is normally pretty good about these things.

While I have seen some show up in my local market (Roriz, Croft, Fonseca, Taylor) I still have not seen many others.

Also have not seen any retailers, even online, with Portal!

I have tried all three of them and concur that the Bual is the best of the bunch. The Malmsey was decent but as Roy said, for the price there are competitors out there. It has some of the richness of a malmsey but not much complexity. The sercial I did not really care for very much. But then I've ha...

Can we perhaps find some general descriptions of the schematics for a goof set of port tongs?

While I am quite inept making such things, my father would be perfect. Perhaps I could have him fashion a pair for me as he has done just such a thing for decades.

I'd still like to taste some Colheitas from the same year that were bottled decades apart. I think it would be very educational.

Having had many meals where the main meat course is served with a rich, dense California Cab or an Aussie Shiraz, I don't see why a VP could not be used in this case. Not a 40 year old bottle, but a younger one certainly. I think a dinner around port would be great. Start off with some white port fo...

I have heard of this but never tried it. Wouldn't this be bitter just lik any other sediment from a red wine? Sure, there may be some leftovers of the grape skin as mentioned, but I have tasted sediment from a wine before and it was not a nice grapey, jam-like taste. Let us know but it does not soun...

Never even seen anything bigger than a magnum of port.

I do have mags and while not opened often, I think an offline is a great place for port magnums.

Even better now: At at store today where this is on closeout for $22.86 per bottle. Buy a mixed case through tomorrow and you can get it 10% off that price. Seems the local distributor is cutting deals to sell the Broadbent off amongst a bevy of other wines. Only other port on closeout was Warres 20...

Kinda got in trouble that way. :( I have a good stash of German riesling, and some Alsacians (VT &SGN). My wife has always been a fan of rieslings but she is way now when I serve them. I like old and young riesling but she does not care much for aged riesling. Had her try some 71/76 BA etc... an...

I guess there really are three types of "port-like" wines out there:

1) Red wines which are fortified.

2) Tawny wines (Aus is a big player as Jason mentioned)

3) Late Harvest reds which are port-like even though they are not fortified (California seems the big player here)

Monique,

It would be interesting to read a tasting note for a port based upon which glass is used. May prove quite useul actually. :)

I always use my Vinum Port glasses for all ports. Perhaps I need to experiment and sacrafice a bottle for science by tasting it from various glasses simultaneously.
