Re: Avoid the Trap
This has turned into a touchingly and unusually insightful thread, with participants showing things on their minds that are beyond our usual joys and into what we think makes life worth living. A varied but lovely thread. I certainly know that whenever there's a fundraiser I have something fantastic...

Re: Avoid the Trap
There is, I am told, a Portuguese saying, which, when translated amounts to the following question and answer: 'Who will drink this vintage port?' '- God knows, for we will be dead by then' And much closer to home (for me..) is the personal mantra of the Gibson family of Saffron Walden, who were bo...

Re: Avoid the Trap
'Wine Clubs' in the Anglo-British world and Canada seem to have been the source of foundation for several ongoing collections; this goes back very far, several hundred years, in places like London, and around universities. So a bequest methodology is not the only way this can happen!

Re: Avoid the Trap
Thanks for the thoughts, Lisa. Mine exactly, I can see. However, with the amount of wine that I have and the fact that due to my medical condition my wife will almost certainly outlive the drinking up of my bucket list, estate planning does become something of a concern, unless I want to let many do...

Re: should I pull the trigger?
This is what is called a cost averaging problem ...would you rather have, say, four bottles for $115 each ($460) or six bottles for $127 each ($760). Now that makes it easier, doesn't it, but do your own calculation to see how it works. By the way, I was looking for some of this wine yesterday, and ...

Re: Colhieta Question, provoked by a Kopke 1982
I can't recall ever seeing a 500ml from Kopke either. I know Rocha bottled their 2000 VP in 500ml and of course Dalva likes this size as well ... I have 2000 Kopke Vintage Port in 500ml. I bought two of them from Wineworth. The bottles are tall, skinny, and squared off after the shoulder. They fit ...

Re: Colhieta Question, provoked by a Kopke 1982
It's not very easy. First you get what is callled the 'Vintage Needle', available with some Coravin kits, and also can be purchased. It is extra wide and has some filtration built into it hub but not much, and has an extra-large lumen (hole). It also has a special brush if it gets blocked. However, ...

Re: Colhieta Question, provoked by a Kopke 1982
I can't recall ever seeing a 500ml from Kopke either. I know Rocha bottled their 2000 VP in 500ml and of course Dalva likes this size as well for some of their older whites now. Warre's Otima 10/20 tawny's are still in 500ml and Vallado and De la Rosa use them a lot as well. But it's not a size tha...

Re: Colhieta Question, provoked by a Kopke 1982
I completely agree, Andy, as a frequent writer to CT about things German and Portuguese and so forth and getting their reality check. Wouldn't it be great to have a world database of all or most commercial wine releases? I guess I was also asking if I should expect considerable differences between t...

Colhieta Question, provoked by a Kopke 1982
Bought a 500 of this, and found that there are at least 3 bottling dates, 2003,2011, and 2015. Mine is now a fourth--the 2009, and the only one I can determine is a 500 ml. CellarTracker is lumping all these releases together, even with the age variation and perhaps length in what the French would c...

Re: Avoid the Trap
Of course the idea of calculating replacement rates and cellar stock levels is emphasized by Hugh Johnson. To simplify, you divide your cellar into more or less 'hand-to-mouth' simpler wines, to be consumed say within a year. How many of these do you drink per week or so forth? Multiply by an approp...

You probably know, Sir, that the regular commercial non-auction Kabinett of current release these days is about Euros 125. And yes, it is that good, all things being equal, but cellar it some, please! A waste to open it now, but I JUST HAD to take one for the team!

Thanks, Andy. Am healing nicely, just like before the Fall. How humiliating to do just before the show-stealing Eclipse! So my ego is now the only bruised part of me.

Thanks for the comments, Paul; this probably gives a hint as to why this wine has developed as it had and so is quite helpful.
