Re: Biggest Port Disappointment You've Purchased?

Here are a few disappointments and trust me I have nothing against this house. :Naughty: 1970 Warre's - nothing really there, way below expectation; bought from a Fort Worth establishment; could have been cooked at some point during it's travel 1990 Warre's LBV - dark, cloying and one dimensional; c...

Re: 1991 Warre's Vintage Port

For me personally, "grippy" does not imply a tannic finish. It means a long, throat-strickening finish of high regard.

1991 Warre's Vintage Port

Upon decanting, a relatively light colored VP with a substantial amount of flaky sediment in the punt. Nose is mostly prunes and cedar/cigar box with a faint hint of baking spice. Fairly sweet on the attack, with a plummy core. Seems imminently drinkable, mature, and balanced to me. The best feature...

Re: Chocolate pairings with Port and/or Madeira

My favorite pairing for Vintage Port has always been Lindt dark truffles. The creaminess inside the truffle offsets the acidity in the port, and you get a nice balancing act. Also, the Lindt dark truffles are not so intense as to overpower the port.

Re: Is seapage always visible/noticeable?

A little seepage is OK. If the cork is pushed out- not so OK. Also if the capsule is bulging a little bit - not so OK. The other thing is those two small holes at the top of the capsule. Not sure what they are there for, but on some bottles of 1997 Niepoort these had the 'ooze' coming out of them a...

I would have to side with the Croft. It's hard to do better in '91.

I have never sold any of my port, but I once traded a '94 Noval for a '98 Chateauneuf du Pape.

Re: 1991 Dow Vintage Port

There is still some spicyness I think the cherry has faded. The palate has mellowed and it is now quite sweet. In my view it is lacking a bit of complexity and the finish isn't particularly long. While I expected a bit more from this port, it still provided some pleasant drinking. 87 points Hi Paul...

Local liquor store, there was a 1970 Graham's for $100 with slight signs of seepage. Went in a couple of times and looked at it. 3rd time I went in it was gone. . .

Re: Oak (or wood) in Port wine

Yes, I do feel like I can detect the oak in LBV's and colheitas. Like Rune, I wonder whether the nutty or 'mahogany' aromas in colheitas come from the wood.

1997 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

from 375ml. Initial decanter nose of prunes and dark chocolate, then later ripe plums. Good midpalate intensity and finish, although seems fairly one-dimensional. A couple of years ago this had more youthful purple color, now is more ruby in color with slight bricking at the rim. I have 2 left in th...
