Re: Q's about LBV decanting, recent Crusteds, & ordering from EU

I agree with Tom's comment. I'm a big fan of bottle aged Tawnies. On my side, as far as companies I'd trust, there are are few. The order listed is not important Niepoort Krohn(before Taylor's acquisition, we'll have to wait to see after's) Andreson Kopke Quevedo Noval Quinta da Romaneira(their old ...

A simple Cossart & Gordon Bual 10 years that was very satisfying.

You need to scan them from the bottle of the advent calendar.

Re: 2013 Quevedo Colheita Burgundy Barrel

I've also been informed that I should have been scanning the QR codes on the bottles because those lead to explanatory videos! I generally avoid QR codes for security reasons unless I know what they are ahead of time, so I'd skipped right over these without a second thought. These should be secure ...

Re: 2013 Quevedo Colheita Burgundy Barrel

Glenn, I think the idea here is more educationnal so we can compare the evolution of this wine in 2 different barrels. Indeed this is still looking very young and this is why the most recent release from Quevedo Colheita is the 2007. I'm a big fan of the 2014 ''Colheita'' from Balseiro #4 that also ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Tonight I'm having 10 years White Port from Niepoort bottled in 2018. I was disapointed from their recent bottling but this one is right on the spot! Rich, complex and spicy, this is exactly what I am looking for into a ten years white!

If possible I would ask the seller a photo of the wax from the top. Often the name of the producer was stamped there.

When was the Burmester 1955 bottled? I still have one bottled in 1985, I hope it won't be that disapointing

Re: Q's about LBV decanting, recent Crusteds, & ordering from EU

Hello folks, I'm enjoying reading the old threads here and have a few questions that I haven't found answers to. 1. How long should do you decant a typical new 6-7 year old LBV? I know this answer may vary depending on tannins etc, but I'm looking for a generic answer for a young LBV whose properti...

I guess we will have to taste them side by side to understand why :-) I would hope that they have such distinct character.

Re: Fires in the Douro Valley

I've just returned from a few days in the Douro. In almost 20 years of visiting this region yearly, I've never seen it so dry. By that I mean, never I have seen so many rusty patch of tree and bushes. The native vegetation really suffured this year, hopefully the trees will recover from their dessic...

Re: Sediment in Port, especially Vintage Port

Nice question Roy, I feel that the only way to answer it properly would be able to taste the same wine everyday for 50 years and measure precisely the amount of sediments we are getting out from a bottle. The only part I feel has not been spoke about enough is how sediments, mostly lees, are keeping...

Re: é possível!

I think the issue is not about Tawny but about those T-Cork ...

Just like regular cork, nothing is perfect. I deal with volume of the same wine at Quevedo and I can tell you it is happening quite rarely. Below 0,3% fore sure!

Good evening Timothy, Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm glad I could make a difference and we'll keep in touch to build your tasting experience back home! For the 1994 vs the 1992, one thing that is interesting, I feel Americans prefer the 1994 and Europeans the 1992. 1992 is quite a unique Co...

Re: Fires in the Douro Valley

Hail in France, fires in the Douro, nature is not kind for vineyards... On the positive side, the low density of easily burning nature in the vineyards is helping to stop the spread unless the winds are strong. But the devastation of native nature is quite negative for the balance and diversity as n...

Re: Tawnies with an indication of age question.

I have asked this question many times to different Port producers. It definitively did not happen before the 60's. Many houses were releasing Tawny Port calling it Adamado or Aloirado, synonyms for Tawny color or style in Portuguese. You then had to know the brand to know how old it was. For example...

Re: 2020 Vintage Port Declaration

Óscar has given me permission to tell that he is showing a cask sample of the Quevedo 2020 vintage Port at the BFT next week. I have not tried the Quevedo 2020 yet. But Quevedo like Noval, Vesuvio will always declare in small quantities something great each year. But for larger groups or houses tha...
