I was tracking the auction, but did not bid on any Madeira as the prices were too rich. The craziest winning bid of all in my opinion was for lot 1176; $2400 plus BP for a single bottle of 1875 D'Oliveira Malvazia. If I'm not mistaken, Rare Wine Co has 11 bottles available for $845 each! [shrug.gif]

We can see some great deals at times in Boston. Many restaurants have invested over the years in their cellars and it shows. Especially the case with Italian restaurants. They seem to understand the idea of building a cellar than do the local steak houses. Most steakhouses around here do not invest...

My only suggestion is that any "big gun" tasting be the first tasting of the weekend, so that palates, minds, and bodies are as fresh as possible.

An excellent 40 year old. Quite dark with translucent green-amber rim. Not a heavy weight, but beautiful balance. Has Barbieto's signature acidity. The 1880 and 1882 Barbeito Malvasias were both stunning and delicious eye openers.

Andresen 20 year tawny. Pretty darn good.

Since they offered to do so, I would exchange the entire lot. Fine wine should never be shipped in such hot weather. Why take a chance?
