Re: Gums affected by alcohol

Sounds a good idea Derek. But first we have to test if we both like the same wines. Next time you're in town lets set up a tasting to check the accuracy of you taste buds [d_training.gif]

Gums affected by alcohol

I'm starting to realize that my gums are being affected, rather unpleasantly. I don't think it is because of my hard toothbrush I have, but instead, because of the numerous wine tasting I participate in, not to mention the amount of alcohol I consume. Even if I spit, I find that after 30 minutes tas...

Re: 2010 Weather and Growing Conditions

Our [beg.gif] is starting to give some fruits. Good job Andy! Temperatures are cooling off, specially overnight. Now we just have to wait for a little bit of rain until the end of the month. That would be excellent for the quality. Something that is puzzling me is the big disparity in terms of matur...

Re: 2010 Weather and Growing Conditions

Good to see Dominique has already shared with you the bad news [cheers.gif] . The good news is that, after [beg.gif] for lower temperatures and rain, temperatures are starting to drop, specially overnight. When I arrived to the winery this morning at 8.45 temperature was 18º, which compares with a 2...

Re: Oscar's Trip to Los Angeles

Andy, I had such a great time yesterday! The BBQ was the perfect excuse to open some beautiful wines. And we were lucky with the Grill man, he made a great job, the meat was delicious! I'm not sure if I want to fly back to Portugal today! Thank you for organizing this Andy! I'm sure everybody had a ...

As Daniel says, there are no rules for the types of bottles we use for Port, even if we are talking about VP. Common sense rules.

Dear friends, the final result was not the one we all were expecting. Although all your effort, the winner for Best Winery Blog is http://www.beendoonsolong.com.

I'll keep sharing with you our life in the Douro and sometimes in other places

Re: Retailer's reactions to returned bottles with TCA

From the producer perspective, we don't get many complains from the clients, and I suppose our TCA incidence index is on the average of other producers. People know that 3-5/100 bottles out there are corked and they use to deal well with the risk. And the more the consumer knows about wines, the bet...

Re: Do you know what this is for?

No clue of what this is, but I would say it's not Port-related. Used in Madeira's wineries to heat up the wine?

Re: Definition of a "Generally Declared Vintage"

If neither TFP nor SFE declares a vintage, for example, it's not generally declared no matter how many small producers make a vintage Port that year. You just can't have a generally declared vintage if none of Croft, Dow, Fonseca, Gould Campbell, Graham, Smith Woodhouse, Taylor, Vesuvio, or Warre a...

Re: Do you ever blend Port at home?

Right Marco! I was thinking in a kind of contest. Based on the proposed blends we receive, we would select one to age for some years. The winner blend would have the name of its creator in the label of the bottles.

Re: Do you ever blend Port at home?

Blending is fun and you can learn a lot doing it. As Dirk Niepoort said before, 2+2 can be much more than 4.

It seems that you too had nice experiences blending. This is giving me an idea. I'll share it with you latter, let me now develop it a bit more.

Re: Touriga Nacional - is it the way to go?

One of the characteristics of the Douro is that the shippers, the big guys that make the high volumes in Port, own a tiny percentage of the land. Most of the grapes are grown by small and very small growers, which not in all cases have a long-term supplying agreement with the wineries. This means th...
