Re: Wine apps for mobile devices?
I just downloaded cor.kz on my iPhone 5 - cool app! [cheers.gif] Thanks for the recommendation, Peter. Have you noticed the little icon at the right end of the search box. Click on it and you can scan the barcode on the bottle. It gets the wine, or at least the winery most of the time unless you ha...

Re: Wine apps for mobile devices?
On my mobiles (iPhone and iPad) I use cor.kz which accesses the cellartracker.com database. I find it works quite well for simple drinking and buying. Not so good for editing your wines or researching. Someday CT may create an app which matched the capabilities of the main website more exactly. Unti...

Re: Elevated cork bottles - stay away?
Not in a port bottle, nor an old bottle, but I recently had a very good experience with a hugely elevated cork. The bottle was a Melchior (18 liter) of a recent (2004) Italian wine, bottled in early 2012 as a special order. When it arrived, the cork had broken out the heavy brittle wax covering and ...

Vinegar IS acid - acetic acid in a 2-5% solution for typical home vinegars. "Distilled White" has the least amount of other compounds - mostly just acetic acid and water.Andrew E wrote:...Oh, and I think vinegar might help the method too...

Re: Difficult Goodbye's
As near as I can tell, Madeira has been exposed to oxygen almost since it was a grape on the vine. Does it suddenly need protection better than a simple cork (to keep the flies out)?

One note: Sharpie marks will fade with time (10-20 years). Most inks will, also. You might consider making your labels with a soft pencil (so you get a dark mark) and protecting them from smudging with a clear overcoat of varnish. Graphite is very resistant to deterioration from the environment. I k...

What/who is a violin monster? I don't know his real name, but you can search for him on google and youtube. He is/was one of Kenny's roommates for a while. The VM is a werewolf that plays a sort of old-timey fiddle in unlikely places. Locally famous (Ann Arbor) but has played in a lot of other citi...

Re: NV Ferreira Duque de Braganca 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Just bought another two cases of this. One for home; one for the Gang of Port. Kenny (the wine guy at Paesanos, who is moving to NYC in September) beat up the local distributor for a per-bottle price significantly below their normal one. I sure hope the new wine guy will be able to do as well. BTW, ...

Re: Vintage Port identification gallery + request for images
For some reason I can't send you a PM. I'm not all that worried about my email (it is found in a lot of places). I use DropBox (username is pwmeek a.t comcast d.t net) and have quite a few photos of port labels. I have more tawnies than VPs; do you want these as well? I also have a backlog of unphot...

Re: Port cellar/port tong recommendations?
I have a Sub-Zero kitchen under-counter wine cooler which is front-vented, but it is too small for storing any serious quantity of wine. We use it for wines which we want to have handy for drinking with meals. It is compressor-cooled, so there might be vibration issues, although I can't feel any ser...

I have one of the Diamante Swarovski bottles (gift for allowing our house to be used as background for a photo shoot). The bottle is just glass, though. Maybe I'll open it for my 70th. (You're all invited.)

Re: Leaking/seepage - should I be worried?
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think any wine becomes dangerous to drink because of in-bottle spoilage. It may become very unpleasant with certain kinds of spoilage: vinegary (from oxygen), "corked" (from TCA contamination in the cork), oxidized (usually from excessive heat ...

Re: Better than perfect
It's similar to the SATs (Scholastic Aptitude Tests). They were (when I took them) intended to be so difficult that NO ONE (and I mean NO ONE EVER) would be able to get a perfect score. They have evidently diluted them to the point that there are quite a few perfect scores these days. Educational me...

:soapbox: My own opinion is that any scale which purports to rate something which is analog (not quantified) should be either open-ended (from minus infinity to plus infinity) or be scaled in such a way that no example ever comes close to the ends of the scale. If some accepted judge rates an exampl...

Re: Shopping for Wine Racks
I dunno. I have certainly bought a number of wine racks for various unexplainable purposes. The "Swedish" racks worked OK once I tied them to the wall. Various other racks have turned out to have limited utility.
