Re: Patrick Grubb's Madeira Offering

The original catalogue showed 'NO VAT'

The listing has now been updated to show VAT (20%) will be charged on 'nearly all' of the lots.

Re: Christies Auction June 9th 2016

Hi Reidar,

I think that is a catalogue error. It has the identical description for the other Borges.

Re: Recorked by OP Brothers?

Hi Mark, I had exactly the same query, but instead of posting here, I dropped Reidar a note - was reluctant to potentially smear someone's reputation without cause. Unfortunately he was travelling, so haven't (yet) got an update. But I'll be seeing him in a few weeks anyway. I've come across these g...

Re: Christies. What did you win?

I haven't managed to get the bottle back to Canada yet. We have this quaint post-prohibition mentality that won't allow ANY importation of alcohol except through a complex importation process involving a 70% markup and only being able to use an 'authorized' customs broker (of which there's only 1 in...

Re: Christies. What did you win?

I recently received Spam (probably with Trojan/Virus) purportedly from Christie's about a document (?credit) posted to Dropbox. These is DEFINITELY not from Christie's (despite a return address at Christies.com).Not sure if they've been hacked or just a lucky shot-in-the-dark that I was a Christie's...

I love the 85 Graham.
Good taste.
(but I also love the 85 Gould Campbell!).

Fair enough comments overall - although you would then pick your own bottle blind, because you prefer it anyway.

So you're not likely to 'talk up' the wine you bring?

Maybe I'm projecting here, but I find 'many' people think their own 'baby' is far better than those of others.

Re: 2016 FTLOP Madeira get together - UPDATED 2/21/15

I would vote a and e, .... I find it good to know what I am drinking so I can start linking up the tastes in my mouth to my brain -Lisa I think that's a good argument for the Saturday tasting to perhaps be non-blind. Or maybe we could reveal the identities of each flight before we move on to the ne...

Re: Vintage 1805, Verdelho, Grand Reserve, Blandy

I also have some that look similar, so probably authentic (the label at least!). Also (typically) a back label 'signed by a Director', plus the source of the wine e.g. "It was acquired by us from D. Eugenia Bianchi Henriques a partner of this firm". Sadly, no bottling date, but the neck la...

Re: 2016 FTLOP Madeira get together - UPDATED 2/21/15

I choose a) as my first choice - makes sense to me to arrange in roughly similar styles. However, I learn more if blind tasting (and means I can't pick my wine as favourite unless it deserves it), so choose d) as my other selection. But we all want to see the labels/stencils so display the bottles a...

Re: Who is bidding up the price of Madeira at auction?

they said some Russian oligarch wanted to buy their entire stock of old bottled wines. I heard similar stories a few years back (and not from Justino's), so it also crossed my mind for this auction. Like Roy, I also thought of the possibility of a fake consignment (although I normally associate tha...

Re: Who is bidding up the price of Madeira at auction?

Every lot I bid on went for more than the high estimate - which means several competing bidders. Apparently more than half the lots went to the same bidder, with the remainder split between 2 other bidders (or more technically, two other paddles - it's possible to bid with more than one paddle).

Who is bidding up the price of Madeira at auction?

Several participants certainly bid at Christie's at the end of last year, where prices were relatively stable (at least in US $). There was also an auction at Hart, Davis, Hart this week (almost 100 lots of madeira) and prices were stratospheric - essentially almost everything went above high estima...

Is Tinta Negra grown on grafted rootstock?

Such a simple question - except when asked this recently, I wasn't sure.
And I can't find anything substantive in my usual reference books. All sorts of stats on plantings and the history.
It is vinifera, so I assume it is grafted.....

A definitive answer, please!
