Re: Autumn trip to Oporto & the Douro valley
Also, just to give an additional opinion, I was less enthusiastic than others about Vinum. Great views, but the food is nothing special and the (wine) service was rather clumsy on the night we visited.

Re: Autumn trip to Oporto & the Douro valley
Is it true you can catch the train from Pinhão to Quinta do Vesuvio and Vargellas? Yes you can, and I highly recommend it. It is a stunningly beautiful train ride. An option if you're into hiking: take the train to Vargellas and walk to Vesuvio. We did this a couple of times, it's a gorgeous hike. ...

Re: TN: 2008 Lokal Silex (Filipa Pato) Beiras red
A bit of a delayed reply, sorry. The most common aromas of Brett are sticky plasters, horse sweat and manure. It used to be very prominent in many Rhone wines, loved by some and considered a fault by others. I find that, in small amounts, it can add some interest to a wine, but can be quite distract...

Did you not find any brett in your bottles? I've tasted this wine multiple times over the last 2 years and all seemed to have it to some extend.
Otherwise a fine wine, I agree.

Re: Is Touriga Nacional really the best grape in Portugal?
In addition to Fred's post (with which I very much agree): isn't it also because many of theses single varietal wines are made from those lesser clones (in terms of character/quality) that these wines fail to impress?

Re: 2013 Niepoort Dão Rótulo Tinto
Why? It'n not an overly complex wine, just a very good daily drinker. "Favorite summer red" & "So very well balanced and utterly drinkable" should warrant more than 88 points, no? A lot of Dao's are not so complex or have a rustic character to them. Moses, Not really. Often ...

2013 Niepoort Dão Rótulo Tinto
My current favourite summer red. Just a lovely combination of red and black fruit, spice and mineral notes. Supple and juicy with light, ripe tannin. So very well balanced and utterly drinkable. Great for the price. 88/100

Re: Are Large Formats Practical for Port?
Only 5 magnums in the collection and all of them from 1977. 2 Graham and 3 Warre. I don't really see the point of large formats apart from the fact that they look cool (although I must admit I like the sight of magnum riesling bottles even more, they are seriously good looking!). If anything, I'd ne...

The annual shipment of Niepoort arrived at their New Zealand importer this week. I was able to get hold of several bottles of the following: - Redoma Tinto 2011 - Redoma Branco Reserva 2010 - Coche 2013 - Quinta de Baixo Vinhas Velhas Branco 2013 (Bairrada) - Lagar de Baixo Tinto 2012 (Bairrada) - C...

Some more points: - If you have a port shop, open it during the day (at least for a little while). Last summer it was closed. It was open during the day when we were there last July. My wife and I love to go there to have a look at the same old bottles we've been looking at for the last 10+ years a...

Re: European Wine Shops and Porto
Portugal is a member of the EU. Are you sure that Portuguese products have import duties in other EU states?. No import duties between EU states but all states have different duty rates on alcohol, some of them very high (eg. UK) and some of them relatively low ((eg. Netherlands, Germany). This mak...

Re: European Wine Shops and Porto
You're generalization of "European" wine prices and "European" wine consumption really doesn't hold, because of the huge difference between countries. There are massive differences in duty rates, having a big impact on prices, and also the consumption pattern varies greatly betwe...

I quite like 375s, and think they're especially great for young VPs. I had a couple of half bottles of Niepoort 09 that were great with steak. I would buy more of them if they were easier to find here...
